Remote Montana gold mine, typical of pre 1900’s operations. Grasshopper Creek runs next to the ghost town of Bannack. The claim receives very few visitors as it is secluded and off the main road. The claim was originally surveyed by Montana Gold And Silver Mines and sampled for rich, free gold deposits in the gravels. The creek is estimated to be over 1000 feet on this claim and about 10 feet to about 14 feet wide. There is plenty of water in the creek. There is likely to be some native silver and possibly some relics to be found on the claim but the primary commodity will be gold. It is estimated by the surveyors that the claim has been worked intermittently in the early 1900’s. No effort to mine for many decades is evident and as the gold has washed down from the tributaries over the decades from the hills and gulches, it has replenished the gold found on this claim. History of the Mines The GRASSHOPPER GOLD #2 Mine is located in the southwest quarter of section 9, approximately 7 miles northwest of Bannack State Park. Grasshopper Creek is the site of the first major gold rush in Montana Territory. GRASSHOPPER GOLD #2 claim is about 6000 feet in altitude. All the gulches that feed Grasshopper Creek from mount Baldy flow into this claim. This claim boasts three great bends in the creek which will trap a lot of gold. The inside bend of a creek will trap a lot of gold and on Grasshopper Creek it could also have good gold in the outside of these bends as well. Bannack, Grasshopper Creek is the site of the first major gold rush in the Montana Territory, the first successful dredging operation in the United States was in Bannack on Grasshopper Creek! More than a ton of gold was taken from the Grasshopper diggings during the first season. Not only were the placer bars easily worked and incredibly rich, they produced some of the purest gold found anywhere in the world. On the average, the gold assayed at 990 fine (99% pure) and in a few cases it went as high as 999 fine - essentially a chemically pure state (Cushman 1973). In 1895 the first successful gold dredging operation in the United States was put into operation along Grasshopper Creek. The Fielding L. Graves dredge was built and first tried the year before but was found to be an unsatisfactory design. It was rebuilt and run profitably until 1902. The connected-bucket dredge was electric powered from a generator on the creek bank. It cost a total of $35,000 to build and had a capacity of 2000 yards of gravel per day. The dredge averaged from $800 to $7000 per cleanup and at one point when it was working some of the richest ground it had cleanups of $22,000 and $38,000. The first mining in the Bannack area focused on the rich placer deposits along the banks of Grasshopper Creek. Following the success of the Fielding L. Graves, four more boats were built. The Molly A. Gibson was launched in the fall of 1895 and worked the area north of the Excelsior mine. The A. F. Graeter was launched in May of 1896 and recovered about $200,000 in the first year of operation. The fourth boat was built by the Bon Accord Company in 1898 but capsized shortly after it was launched. A fifth boat was built in the summer of 1898 by the Montana Gold Dredging Company and worked the area near Spring Gulch until 1902. Although the Fielding L. Graves operated economically and efficiently on electric power, the four subsequent boats were all steam powered. There was little activity on Gold Creek until 1866, when the Pioneer mining district was organized. The placers of Pioneer Creek and its tributaries, French and Squaw gulches, soon overshadowed the initial placers on Gold Creek. The Pioneer district never rivaled the other major strikes of Montana, but just the same the district flourished all through the 1870s. New placer deposits were discovered and developed. Production from 1860 - 1950 2,264,492cy mined. 4,105,659g Au recovered. 27,589g Ag Recovered. FAQ Mining claims are a tangible asset and show your rights to all interests in minerals in the claim boundary. They can be bought, sold or used as collateral, just like any other piece of real estate. A mining claim can be sold, traded, leased, gifted, willed, used as collateral or transferred in part or in its entirety just like any other real property using a quitclaim deed which is a recordable conveyance. This auction is for 100% - all interest in this 20 acre placer mining claim. This claim covers the entire site, 1,320 ft. by 660 ft., and includes full rights to all minerals and gems you may find on the property. The winner of this auction will receive a notarized quitclaim deed to the full claim and all associated documentation showing full ownership of the claim. Maintenance on all BLM mining claims is $155.00, per 20 acre parcel, annually. This must be paid on or before September 1st, every year unless you do more than $100 per year in improvements to the property, in which case you can file for and receive a waiver of the maintenance fee. NOTE: If you own fewer than 10 claims nationwide, and you perform at least $100 in assessment work in the year, you can plan on paying just $15 per year for your maintenance fee instead of $155. We can assist you in filing the paperwork to waive the maintenance fee. Transfers of Ownership in Mining Claims: Interest in a legally valid and properly recorded mining claim or site may be transferred in part or its entirety. So you can will, gift, sell or lease your interest in this claim at any time in the future. A quitclaim deed or recordable conveyance document is required and if you do sell the claim, the transfer documents should be filed within 60 days after the transfer. With regard to transferring this claim initially into your name, we take care of all the paperwork at our expense. You do not have to worry about anything – we handle the County and BLM transfer documentation and the recording. Can you camp / build on your mining claim? Without an approved plan of operations, you have the same rights and restrictions as the public. If the area is open to camping to the public, then it is permissible for you to camp. However, you need to check with the BLM Field Office or the local District Ranger for areas open to camping. Under Federal law in order to occupy the public lands under the 1872 mining laws amended, for more than 14 calendar days in any 90 day period, a claimant must be involved in certain activities that (a) are reasonably incident; (b) constitute substantially regular work; (c) are reasonably calculated to lead to the extraction and beneficiation of minerals; (d) involve observable on-the-ground activity that can be verified; and (e) use appropriate equipment that is presently operable, subject to the need for reasonable assembly, maintenance, repair or fabrication of replacement parts. All five of these requirements must be met for occupancy to be permissible.
