Seller: frantique2000 (11,428) 100%, Location: Yorkshire, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 351736551608 This listing is for a genuine French vitreous enamel on sheet steel street sign. Châteaux Japy is a commune of twelve châteaux in Territoire de Belfort, a tiny department in eastern France. Eight still stand and four were demolished from 1975 onward. They were all properties built and owned by the Japy family, early C19th and later industrialists. Their number included the famous clock makers Japy Frères. An area was designated Cité Fernand Japy in 1920. Probably because Château Fernand Japy is the oldest of the twelve, built in 1800. This sign dates from around 1930. It may well be one of the originals, quite likely salvaged after some of the demolition work and destruction between 1975 and 2014 (when the most recent one lost burned down). It is slightly convex with the white enamel in bas relief. Superb quality with excellent definition. This is a genuine piece of French cultural, socio-economic, architectural and industrial history. Maybe religious too, as the Japys were noted as being Protestant. So rare. UK postage free of charge. Elsewhere £30. UK bank cheque or transfer, PayPal. Condition: edges chipped, particularly bottom corners, otherwise good for age, Type: Plaques/ Signs, Material: vitreous enamel on sheet steel, Style: traditional French
