He was executed on 22 October 1941 without trial - as an existing detainee he was among 27 killed in retribution for the assassination of a senior German commander on 20 October. He is reported singing the French national anthem before the German firing squad. The seventeen years old Guy Môquet, author of a letter famous to this day, was among the others killed.
