It is from the town of Verdun. 10" x 20". Made in 1950s - very heavy gauge. Aspirant (officer cadet) Buffet (1896-1966) was with the 142nd Infantry Regiment of Lodève (small town just north of Montpellier on the Mediterranean coast). Buffet is remembered as a hero during the German attack and capture of Fort de Vaux in June 1916 - part of the Battle of Verdun. The assault and capture lasted from 1-7 June 1916. The French Infantry were contained in Fort Vaux under German bombing, gas and flamethrower attack. Casualties were high and injuries untreated. Buffet was one of a small volunteer party that escaped to reach French High Command and inform them of their predicament. Again, voluntarily, he then returned to the fort "to share his comrades' fate" - his sergeant was killed by French fire during their return. Buffet stayed in the army and was responsible for officer training in Narbonne at the start of WWII. Then he became a maths teacher. Buffet declined numerous honours in recognition of his courage; "Give them to the real heroes". Free UK postage. PayPal, UK bank cheque or UK to UK bank transfer.
