Whiting. This warmer can also be called a saucier, pipkin or sauce boat. It has a medium toned, brown wooden handle. Each piece is marked with “STERLING BY FRANK M WHITING & COMPANY;” Frank M Whiting’s maker’s mark; and “1600.” The brandy warmer and underplate are NOT monogrammed. The sterling is in good estate condition, although with the patina of old tarnish and fine scratches to be expected with age and use. Note that personal information has been etched on the bottom of both pieces near the maker’s mark. This in no way affects or diminishes the beauty of the pieces. In addition, although the wooden handle is structurally sound, there is a good bit of wear to its finish, and it could benefit from new varnish. The set’s price reflects its condition. This brandy warmer and plate will make a lovely addition to any silver collection. The brandy warmer weighs 2.765 troy ounces, including the wooden handle, although that does not give a very accurate indication of value. The plate weighs approximately 1.745 troy ounces and is roughly 5.375” in diameter. The top edge of the brandy warmer is roughly 4” in diameter and 2” deep. It is 8.25” from the tip of the handle to the far side of the warmer. The Frank M. Whiting & Co. was founded in 1878 in North Attleboro, Mass., by the son of William Whiting, the founder of the Whiting Manufacturing Co. In 1897 the company was incorporated. Later it was purchased by the Ellmore Silver Company of Meriden, CT, circa 1940. Their line included sterling silver flatware, holloware, novelties, souvenir spoons, and baby goods.
