Due to the high humidity and temperatures, coins stored in this manner tone much faster than coins stored at room temperature. I sell thousands of proof and mint coins per month. When I cut up the sets any toned coins I set aside in the garage and list them like this listing when I have time. How to spot articial toningIf both sides of the coin are toned the same or to the same extent be cautious. Coins in proof or mint sets are usually stored flat so one side of the coin is not exposed to air and thus should not tone. Older Jefferson nickels are the exception to this. I think it is because the rim is not high relief so air gets on both sides ot the coin.Just because a coin is certified and not tagged as artificially toned does not mean it is not artificially toned. In fact if you do a search for toned morgans you will see that at least 50% of these coins have identicial toning on both sides. Unless the coin sat in a original mint bag for 50 years how is this possible?Unscrupulous sellers know how to tone coins after they are graded and slabbed. It's very easy to do. In the last few years these same dispicable sellers have bombarded the grading companies with Artifically toned coins. As a result of this some grading companies are over cautious when grading toned coins. I have personally broken coins out of proof sets I have had for 10 years and sent them in to be graded only to come back as artificially toned. On the other hand I see hundreds if not thousands of toned slabbed coins listed that are obviously artificially toned. Nobody including graders at the grading companies can with 100% certanty tell if a coin is artificially toned or not. Again, if both sides of the coin are toned exactly the same ask your self how both sides of that coin received the exact same exposure to the exact same air.If you purchase this coin and decide to get it graded I suggest you send it to PCGS. They are more liberal about toning but they still may kick it back as "suspicious toning". I cannot guarantee the actions of someone else. All I can do is tell you how this coin toned.
