Seller: buysel (3,706) 100%, Location: Concord, New Hampshire, Ships to: US, Item: 372550577243 For your consideration fresh from a New England Estate is AN ANTIQUE QUAINT ART FURNITURE AFTER L & JG STICKLEY FUMED OAK MISSION ARTS & CRAFTS SPINDLE FOOTSTOOL FOOT STOOL . This stool is a L & J.G. Stickley design and I have only seen one other example of this stool form shown on Worthpoint which was identified as a pair of L & J.G. foot stools that were sold by Julien's Auctions on October 17, 2009 for $7187.50. Those footstools were noted as pair of L & Jg Stickley spindle foot stools and the listing was as follows: With side spindles and reupholstered tops, circa 1907. See number 300 in the " Gustav Stickley Craftsman Furniture Catalogue April 1912,"page 9. PROVENANCE : Michael Carey, New York, NY. I came across some information online that indicated Quaint Art Furniture Company made furniture of the same quality as any of the Stickley brothers, but stole their entire marketing campaign from other makers. The name Quaint was taken from the Stickley Brothers, and their finish was even called "Stickley's Fumed Oak". Gustav Stickley sued them in 1910 to stop them from using the term "Craftsman" but did not win the suit. There is a tag on the inside top of the stool from Quaint Art Furniture Co. of Syracuse NY and this stool is all original with the notation that someone has covered it in fabric to replace the leather cushion that it originally had. In 1909 the Quaint Art Furniture Company Incorporated with a capital stock of $5000 in order to produce a complete line of "Quaint Art Furniture" The plant size was 10,000 square feet and equipped with the necessary machinery to make a fine line of these goods although much of the work is done by hand. The two drying kilns have a capacity of 25,000 feet of lumber. The factory also includes a fuming plant and a leather department, all of the coloring and finishing being done in this department, which is especially arranged for that purpose. (From Woodcraft A Journal of Woodworking May, 1909). The measurements are 20 3/8" wide, 16" front to back, 15" tall, and the weight is 12 lbs and 8 oz. The condition is all original finish with some edge losses to the wood, there are small bits of white paint on the wood and one leg has a check in the wood as pictured on the top and the bottom of the leg. The stool was recovered in fabric which looks fairly vintage so it was done a long time ago, and I'm sure whoever wins this stool will have a proper leather cushion made. The stool is tightly held together with pinned construction and there is a slight movement side to side in the stool. This stool will be professionally packed insured and shipped by UPS or you can pick it up locally.
