Descendants claimed their grandfather somehow acquired this artifact by tribes just north of the Puget Sound island. The face appears to be a representation of a supernatural being that apparently was met by an ancestor. This condition would usually allow for a descendant to represent such in a wooded carving, or in this case a small, transportable effigy. But the small, palm-sized nature of this artifact strongly suggests if was used by a Shaman to perhaps, cure an illness or summon good hunting conditions.Pacific Northwest tribes had a rich tradition with those special individuals known as Shamans. The belief was that these people had power through an ability to communicate with the spirit world. The effigy has minor nicks and dings along the top area and partially along the lower face. Abrasion scratches are evident on the rear of this artifact. Condition: Minor nicks and dings along the top area and partially along the lower face, Color: Brown, Maker: Indigenous people of Pacific Northwest, Material: Wood, Original/Reproduction: Original
