Fine 1819 Elaborate Georgian Sampler Featuring Fabulous Large Cat Original Frame

An exceptional Georgian sampler with an extraordinary depiction of a crouching cat!

Ten-year-old Rhoda Trickle worked this intricate and colorful sampler in the West Midlands of England in 1819. It is full of wonderful needlework and fine pictorial elements.

At the top Rhoda worked a complex wide band in a very difficult type of needlepoint (Bargello stitch). The entire sampler is enclosed on all four sides by a vividly colored stylized floral border. The variety of motifs include trees, flowers, birds, deer, a central basket and a most amazing cat. This exceptional motif, the large striped cat shown on a lawn with flowers, sets this sampler apart.

Rhoda stitched the following verse:

“Next unto God dear parents I address

Myself to you in humble Thankfulness.

For all your care and charge on me bestow’d.

The means of learning unto me allow’d.

Go on I pray and let me still pursue

Those golden arts the vulgar never knew”

She placed her signature within a rectangular cartouche at the bottom of the sampler:

“Rhoda Trickle her work 1819 in the 11th year of her age”.

The sampler is in overall very good antique condition with bright color and strong visuals. The black silk threads used for the verse and signature line have deterred as was so common with the black vegetable dyes used for this color. The verse and signature are difficult but not impossible to read. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a darkened linen ground. The age darkening is more pronounced around the verse and signature areas.

The needlework is set in a patinated period mahogany veneer frame. The glass is museum-quality conservation glass. All materials are acid-free, including a spacer to keep the artwork away from the glass.

Genealogical Notes on Rhoda Trickle (1808 - 1863):

Rhoda Trickle spent her entire life in the West Midlands of England. She was born June 18, 1808 in Nuneaton Parish, Warwickshire, England, to Thomas and Catherine (Watsons) Trickle.

Rhoda married Samuel Morris (1805 - 1892) in 1832 at Saint George’s, Birmingham, England. The couple lived in Coventry and it was there that their nine children were born: Lucy 1834, Robert Hutchins 1836, William 1837, Elizabeth Jane 1839, Samuel 1841, Thomas 1843, Joseph Richard 1848, Mary Ann 1850, and James Charles Morris 1852.

The last photo in the listing shows two of Rhoda Trickle’s descendants: her granddaughter and namesake Rhoda Emma Morris (1867 - 1936) with her own granddaughter (Rhoda’s great great granddaughter).

Additional genealogical records and copies of photos (Rhoda’s descendants) will be included with the sampler.
