Item:232421597340FOREST CRAFT GUILD Winged Dragon SASH PIN Arts&Crafts Acid-Etched Antique Brooch. FOREST CRAFT GUILD Winged Dragon/Serpent SASH PIN Circa 1905 - 1918 Arts & Crafts Acid-Etched Antique Brooch This Arts & Crafts style, handmade pin is embellished with an elaborately detailed Winged Dragon and a bezel-mounted green stone (aventurine? agate?) cabochon. The large, metal brooch features an all-over textural acid-etched design of abstract shapes - each finished with a hammered edge. The aged copper and gold patina of the metal suggest an alloy of copper and brass, although it is possibly bronze. This pin is not magnetic. FOREST CRAFT GUILD: Forest Emerson Mann, revered for his refined Arts & Crafts, handmade jewelry, opened the Forest Craft Guild in 1905. The acid-etched textural pattern of abstract shapes on this brooch is characteristic of several Forest Craft Guild jewelry designs. Although there are rare exceptions, most pieces from this workshop are unsigned. Note the tiny hammered tool marks edging each shape. SASH PINS: The large size, buckle-like shape, T-bar hinge, C-clasp and very thick pin stem of this brooch are all characteristic of an antique Sash Pin. Fashionable from the late 1800s through the early 20th century, this type of brooch was used to secure a sash at the hip when worn over the shoulder or around the waist. The long length of the pin itself --2 1/8 inches -- was a Sash Pin requirement in order to penetrate and fasten through l ayers of fabrics. Antique Sash Pins are still coveted today as scarf and coat pins. WINGED DRAGON: The heraldic Winged Dragon, a harbinger of good fortune, is soldered in place. Note the remarkably precise carved details that depict its ears; eye; crested head; scaly skin; serpentine pose, teeth; tail, and webbed wing. CONDITION (as stated above) : Excellent condition overall. Both the applied dragon and bezel-set cabochon are securely mounted and in excellent condition. The only light scratches visible are those on the lower middle scallop. The lower left corner appears slightly more bent than the other three which were intentionally shaped by the crafter. The pin is securely attached, unbent and solid as is the T-bar hinge and C-clasp closure. DIMENSIONS: 2 1/2" Wide 2 7/8" Tall SHIPPING: This item will be sent within one business day of your payment.
