Ebay has a ton of categories, but NOTHING for Olympic medals. If you want to be in an Olympic category it's lumped together with banners, decals, souvenirs et al. This medal is beautiful and looks like silver but it's not marked as such so I do not know. It is very, very high relief on the obverse, and very low on the reverse, more than a normal coin or medal with barely any design raised. I believe this is the version that was given to participants; I acquired a second identical but smaller medal at the same time and that one is without a box but simply due to size I'm assuming it was the one given to volunteers. I've seen several different souvenir medals and they do not have this incredibly high relief design. The wooden box is great (very lightweight wood) in perfect condition. At one time some 20 years ago I ventured out into Olympic items, mostly participant and special award medals and related special items as opposed to souvenirs. After handling items from fairs from as early as 1908 up through the most modern Olympic games, I decided I was just venturing too far afield and tried to continue my focus on world's fairs and expositions along with US coins. It can be quite a conundrum, having a broad enough inventory to earn a living yet not pouring tens of thousands of dollars into the tougher things to sell. As a historian, just the subject I have written about and studied stretches me far enough. From time to time I continue to pick up Olympic items when I can do so without breaking the bank, so to speak. I have some tickets and programs right now I will be listing. I have to be very careful NOT to get carried away keeping the very special items. I had one of the most gorgeous silver boxed presentation medals from London in 1908 that I bought to sell and couldn't part with...finally after a couple years I sold it and I still wish I had it here on display. I'm sure it would fetch $2,000-$2,500 now. This is a bit more modern medal. I remember the '64 Olympics as I was just becoming a history/sports nerd as a kid when I followed those games in Tokyo.
