Prominent American Folk Artist, Cody Foster, has expanded his line of decorative items with gorgeous reproductions copied from antique pieces, including in his own personal collection. From his fertile mind and imagination comes this large, exquisite ~Madonna Statue.~ This beautiful piece is part of Cody's extremely popular line of home décor, holiday folk art, and decorations produced by his amazing studio, ~Cody Foster & Co.~ (formerly known as ~Backporch Friends~). It is a genuine, authorized reproduction of Cody Foster's original art work. This piece is crafted from paper pulp compo to replicate hand-carved wood; hand painted and decorated in rich, antique colors; and painstakingly aged and distressed. In fact, this looks just like the very old pieces so wildly coveted by collectors of religious artifacts. This wonderful figurine is a reproduction of a beautifully worn, antique statue of the Virgin Mary. It is the classical depiction of Mary as the Immaculate Conception. She standing on a crescent moon and crushing a serpent underfoot. She is hand painted and decorated in rich jewel tones and metallic shades and perfectly distressed to replicate decades of devotion and wear. The statue is a very large size. It measures 28-inches tall and 11-inches wide. The statue’s pedestal base is 5½-inches tall, and its footprint is 11-inches by 7-inches. (The Statue weighs over 5½-pounds.) The craftsmanship of this piece is exquisite. The vintage coloring; aged finish; and design are beautiful! Mary is hand painted in muted jewel, sepia and flesh tones and perfectly distressed to replicate decades of devotion and wear. The intricacy with which her painting and decoration has been worn away, aged and distressed truly makes this piece a unique work of art. Mary is posed in a standing position with her arms extending down and out at her sides. She looks down and to the right. Her right knee is bent, and her left foot stands on a crescent moon and crushes the head of the Serpent from the Garden of Eden. He holds a fruit from the Tree of Knowledge in his open mouth. The Serpent coils beneath Mary’s gown and robe. Mary is dressed in a long ivory gown. Draped over her back and arms is cloak in brilliant, peacock blue. Touches of the cloak’s pale pink inner lining can be seen as it drapes around her body. Her cuffs are metallic gold. She wears sandals with turquoise straps on her bare feet. Mary has beautifully sculpted hands and head. Her skin is painted alabaster white. Her hair is dark, walnut brown and curls on her neck and shoulders. He has finely painted brown eyebrows and soulful brown, downcast eyes. They are finely outlined in brown. She has a long, graceful neck and an aquiline nose. Her lips are carmine red. A stamped and hand cut tin halo surrounds her head like the rays of the sun. The halo is stained brown for a rusted effect. Last but not least, Mary’s ears are adorned with drop earrings on silver wires. Tiny opalescent glass beads ~ like miniature pearls, dangle from the ends of the wires. Simply lovely! Mary stands on hemisphere of dark blue sky on a sculpted pedestal that is painted in a brown wood tone with metallic gold paint embellishments. The sky is dotted with golden stars. The pedestal is edged in gold and decorated with gold flourishes and winged cherub heads. A cartouche embellished with red paint decorates the front of the pedestal. The entire piece has been lovingly aged and distressed with sepia glaze and a worn and crackled finish. The Statue has been artistically modified using a number of faux aging techniques. The modeling even replicates wear, chipping and cracks, reflecting decades of age. These “flaws” make this ~Madonna~ uniquely and exceptionally beautiful. An exquisite devotional piece. This imported piece is brand new and unused. It is in MINT condition and ready for your decorating! Perfectly distressed, its "worn" finish and muted colors give the Madonna a very "vintage" feel and appearance. She would fit beautifully into a "Shabby," "Cottage Chic," "Paris Apt.," or "Garden Style" home and look amazing gracing a mantel, dresser, table or shelf. This is a statement piece! What a wonderful way to start (or add to) a collection of religious artifacts. Cody's work blends beautifully with other religious folk art and real antiques and vintage collectibles. "As a little boy, Foster had spent much of his spare time with his grandmothers, both of whom created crafts as gifts for family and friends. Only occasionally did they sell to shops or at craft shows, but when they did, Foster was usually in tow. They kept their grandson out of mischief by teaching him to thread a needle and sew rag dolls. 'I remember sitting at this one really boring craft show and [beginning to doodle],' he says. "When I got home, I made Sunshine Suzy-Q, my first doll. Foster began selling his creations by the time he was a sophomore in high school, doing craft shows in small communities in northern Nebraska and in larger areas such as Omaha and Rapid City, S.D. He admits to playing hooky from school to get ready for the shows. As a high school senior, he was approached by a wholesale rep who wanted to represent him; the rep quickly got him into his first wholesale show in metropolitan Kansas City just two weeks after his high school graduation. Cody's designs have become nationally recognized. His work has been featured in Country Living magazine, the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City, and in high-end boutiques, museum shops, and department stores across the country. His work is prized by designers and collectors alike, for their unique and whimsical charm." ~ © 2002 College of Business Administration, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
