For your consideration is this remarkable rare gallery quality 19th century pair of English sterling silver and spondylus shell base chamber sticks in elegant traditional form and bearing full English hallmarks. The maker mark is clearly T • D on both pieces and in three places on each along with London Assay Mark and date letters S and T for 1873 and 1874 respectively.

The silver is strong gauge assayed English silver struck with the Lion passant and remains in excellent condition especially taking in to consideration the age of these objects. Kindly inspect the photos carefully to examine the various aspects. The highly textured shells are marvelous museum quality specimens of large spiny oyster also known as thorny oyster bases which are the most colorful of the bivalves' two halves, with beautiful form, extreme scale for the tolerance of the species and no chips, which is astounding. The external natural pattern is variegated, flecked with mauve and pink hued accents along the striations. The pink color of this species is rare and would have been found only in the ocean depths by skilled shell divers capable of holding their breath for over two minutes. Today these fine specimens are nearly extinct. The characteristic internal lining of the shells is smooth and clean with natural luster. Faint crazing is present near the fittings that is from the time of creation and more visible now due to age as expected part of original patina. These are stunning period examples and certainly one of a kind models of English aesthetic to showcase. To have a pair of these exquisite art treasures is a rare opportunity. The wrought holder is likely for a wick trimmer or snuffer to lay across, and the internal vessel is there potentially to hold matches or spills. These are marvelous art objects with intrinsic style and beauty brought to life by their maker. Impressive on display or for use on a table or sideboard with narrow tapers. A grand accent piece to showcase in any setting and a desirable acquisition for a serious collector or connoisseur of sterling silver decorative arts objects of virtue.
