SHIRLEY BIERMAN 1923-2010 BIO (obituary taken from the June 4, 2010 The Desert Sun newspaper) “Shirley Bierman, 86, of Rancho Mirage, California, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday, May 28, 2010. Born on June 10, 1923 in St. Louis, Missouri, to parents who emigrated from Russia, she is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Dr. Edward Bierman; five children, nine grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many devoted friends. She was much loved by all, and did not have to wait for her passing to be told so. A lifelong artist, her talents encompassed many areas in both the fine and applied arts. In her youth, Shirley was recognized as a concert/opera singer, performing on stage, radio and television. She then married, raised her beloved family and started a "hobby" in copper enameling which soon revealed her wonderfully diverse artistic ability. Her works in copper enamels and cloisonné were selected by the late Sascha Brastoff for exhibit in his state-of the-art gallery. She was a participating artist in the California Expo, and contributed an enamel to "The Dinner Party" by Judy Chicago, a multi-media exhibit viewed in museums nationwide. Many "Springs" homeowners are familiar with Shirley's beautiful one-of-a-kind hand-beaded evening bags, often likened in style to that of Faberge. Recent creations are part of the permanent collection in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. She was the featured artist in a four month exhibit at the Rancho Mirage Library in California and has exhibited in Beverly Hills and Palm Desert. Shirley's philanthropic contributions have included United Cerebral Palsy and Gilda's Club. A Memorial Service will take place at 11:00 AM, Sunday June 6, 2010 at Mount Sinai Memorial.”
