$500.00 5 Bids Sold

Seller: artemisgallerylive (37) 100%, Location: Louisville, Colorado, Ships to: Free Local Pickup, Item: 263787523240 LOT 72CSeller's Estimate: USD 600 - 900 Egypt, probably Alexandria, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. A mold made figure of a woman, shown in a seated position, nude aside from a headdress, with her legs spread out wide in front her, exposing her genitals. While it may seem surprising to modern viewers, it was very common for Romano-Egyptians to encounter sexual scenes in everyday life; after all, sexual activity was seen as a gift from the goddess Venus rather than something sinful or guilt causing. Size: 3" W x 3.25" H (7.6 cm x 8.3 cm) Alexandria was an important port town in Roman Egypt, and through it, Roman cultural ideas came into the ancient kingdom. Part of this included items like this figure produced by the healthy ceramic industry that sprang up in the city, producing domestic and funerary ware, votive statues, toys, and other items. Egypt of course had had its own tradition of pottery items prior to the arrival of the Greco-Romans, but the Romans brought new forms of material culture that seem to have become quickly fashionable.
