Seller: it-cranks-my-handle (1,012) 100%, Location: Portrush, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 142195344053 Here is an interesting early and very substantially locking manacle device, first impression it looks like a leg manacle, it is the correct size and does close and clock around my ankle, but it’s very tight. What drew me to it was it’s very unusual design of locking mechanism best described as 5 spring out arms ( in 2 different plains ) holding the locking pin in place, to insert the key into the barrel you first have to present the key at 90 degrees into the half circular opening, then turn it in line with the barrel pushing the key in, the specifically designed holes in the key act on the 5 spring out arms these uniquely positioned around the pin, closing them which allows the locking pin to be pushed out of the barrel and then pulled by hand clear of the device, removing the key the manacle can then be opened by pivoting at the hinge. The only ones I have been able find with an identical locking mechanism are said to be from the medieval period and used in European prisons and dungeons circa late 1600's to late 1700's. This one is certainly very old and does have the correct patina, it is made of iron, the main restraint is very large in circular cross section, 1 ½ cm in diameter, the barrel is 2 cm in diameter. The hinge is in good condition with a little wear / play in it. The rivet holding it together is virtually indiscernible by the eye. There is a mark on the barrel and on the locking pin to ensure the user lines them up before inserting the pin otherwise the key will not open the lock. The half circular opening on the barrel looks like it has had a repair at a time, the closed half circle being re soldered in, there are traces of what looks like a copper material around the opening where the hasp enters the barrel and on the inside of the barrel at this point as well. Please check the many images which will help describe this better than I can. Feel free to ask any further questions etc. Any further help identifying it would be much appreciated.
