Small early 19th century linen and copper coloured silk work sampler by Sarah Stockburn? Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1835.  In addition to this, whilst Sarah has signed her name STOCKB, I acquired this sampler with another by Ann Stockburn which is on my current listings due to end this weekend. As such I think it is likely that Sarah's surname is also Stockburn and the girls may well have been sisters.  This little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the linen are stitched with rows of alphabet letters and numbers, each underlined with a different example of border pattern. Sarah's name is contained within the lower section of the linen with the following incomplete verse below Fragrant the rose is but it fades in time The violet sweet but quickly past the prime White lilies hang their heads and soon dec(ay) T he linen  has overall, somewhat brown discolouration consistent with its age with an area of staining to the lower right quadrant and a light crease running across the middle. The colours of the silk has mellowed from its original vibrancy but the effect is still a pleasing one. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Sarah first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of paper around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time. As can also be seen from the photographs, there is a border pattern running across the bottom edge of the linen plus the last two words of the verse have been worked in a different colour thread. As such, I think this may well be the work of a different hand, possibly worked at a later date.  Measures 8" x 10 1/4" I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL working on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE! ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING. I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE POSTAGE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES.
