Penobscot Native American Indian Knitting / Crochet Basket Pre WWII Fine weave - Penobscot Native American Indian knitting / crochet basket in excellent condition. The basket has a Hong Kong cord handle and some of the weavers are also Hong Kong cord. This commercial material was used by Wabanaki basket makers from about 1920 - WWII. So all baskets containing it are easily dated. It has a Penobscot star shape attaching the coiled ash that is used to protect the hole in the lid. Approximately 7 inches tall X approximately 6 inches wide. There is one area on one of the handles where a few of the cords are cut as shown in the last photo. This basket is finely woven. An excellent example of a knitting/ crochet basket.

My research has left me not quite positive as to it's origin other than the fact that it is old and original US made Native American. A very well made basket with geometric pattern and a very tight weave that makes you think of the strong hands that made this basket. Imagine needing something like this and no Walmart! Had to sit down and make one....and not in just an hour. This basket measures approx. 10" tall and 10" in diameter at the top. There has been a bit of wear and a creative repair with straw and twine at the top rim...please see pictures. A great basket worthy of any collection. I welcome any information that would help me to know for sure where this is from exactly.

The basket is made of ash wood splints - the traditional basketry material of Wabanaki basketmakers - (Wabanaki Confederacy - includes 5 tribes in Northern NE and Eastern Canada -including the Passamaquoddy). The weavers are mostly ash wood splints but at the top "shoulder" of the basket there are a few finely braided tidal sweetgrass weavers, for a decorative look. and the top flared/scalloped rim has only finely braided tidal sweetgrass weavers.

Antique Paint-Decorated Penobscot Basket - Maine - 0" Sq. -Great Paint & Surface - An Eastern Woodland, Native-American, ash splint basket, probably Penobscot tribe of Maine, certainly antique, late 19th or early 20th century. It measures 10 15/8" square by 4" tall, with the splints died three different colors, and with an overall pattern of stencil-painted florettes. It is in an exceptional state of preservation, with no breaks, stain and paint still vivid, and a fine darkened surface, showing its age very appealingly. I've dealt in thousands of baskets during my many decades in the trade. This is one of the very few that, given form, decoration and condition, I am comfortable referring to as museum quality. Passamaquoddy Square Handkerchief Basket C/1920-60 Undamaged basket - Varnished - This is a square handkerchief basket - It is complicated shape to make with the rounded corners - and so you don't find many of this shape. It was woven between 1920-1960. On the center of the basket bottom and of the basket lid there is a 3.5" square that is woven with dyed ash splint weavers alternating with braided tidal sweetgrass.

Rare 19th Century Haida Indian Hat Basket - 14 " - Northwest Coast - This rare old Haida Northwest Coast Indian basket hat is in good condition. It looks like there's an old museum number on it. It measures 14" to 14 3/4" at the widest point and it is 6" tall at the highest point. The inner headband is all present. However, it has pulled apart from the hat about halfway around. All of the weaving is still present, it could be re-stitched if needed. These hats are very rare and this is a wonderful example of one.

Rare Maine Wabanaki Large Antique Braided & Coiled Sweetgrass Olla - 13" Tall - A large, antique basketry storage jar or olla from Maine, of a very rare form and size, made by a member of one of the Wabanaki tribes, probably Penobscot, probably early 20th century. It is constructed using braided and coiled sweet grass on a cedar warp. Its 12 3/4" tall by 11 1/2" diameter, 8 3/4" at the rim. It is in fine condition, with a very nice warm surface. As is usually the case with Eastern Woodland basketry, the dyes used were very much fugitive, and only remains where the surface wasn't exposed to light. There is no indication where else the dye might have been applied.

It would date to the 1930s or earlier. Quite large measuring 14" wide both ways so exactly square and 11.5" tall. The condition is really nice with one small break in the splint which I've pictured. Antique Native American Makah Covered Basket c. 1910 - This finely woven Makah Indian tribe covered basket dates to the early 20th c. The body of the basket is uniquely square in plan with a round lid. A couple of contrasting colors are used to accent the basket: a deep and a lighter purple (now faded on the exterior) and a chocolate brown that I think was derived from natural sources.

Eskimo Basket w/ Bone Fox Knob - This is a very neat and sturdy Eskimo Basket, 9 1/2" tall and 9 1/2" wide at the middle point. It is 7" across the bottom and 8 " across the top. It has a very nice bone knob depicting a fox. It is tight, heavy and sturdy with just a few missing wraps, nothing loose. It has triangle decoration in two different brows on a natural color. Early Makah Twined Open LOOP TOP Cedar Basket 6 “ x4”x3” - Early Makah Twined Open LOOP TOP Cedar Basket 6 “ x4”x3.5”. This basket was beautifully woven by a PACIFIC NORTHWEST Native American weaver. It is woven with cedar and beargrass as baskets have been woven for millennia. The stitches are woven tightly at seven per inch. The basket is in very good condition, however the embellished LOOP Top has come loose in several places. Other than the top, there are no losses that I could see. Please look at pictures for more details. The basket is slightly misshapen, but that could be corrected. In anticipation of a smaller retirement space, I am downsizing. The basked has displayed nicely in my case and is an excellent example of Makah weaving. Carefully packaged and shipped with usps.,

Algonquin Folded birch bark container with leaf and flower designs - Folded Algonquin birchback basket-container with two tone Flower and leaf designs. The birch bark was collected in the spring so it could grow back. The fresh bark was folded and sewn together with spruce root the designs were drawn and then the darker bark layer was scraped off to reveal the lighter inner bark. 7"x 7" has brain tan leather ties. Some of the stiching is missing on the inner rim. A real fine piece of folk art. 82050

I collected baskets for a while and this nice Klikitat basket depicts dogs i believe. Imbricated with earthy colors. Rim is 8 inches diameter. Stands about 3 inches tall. Time to sell it. Very large Pima storage basket late 19th century; 15"h x 15.5"w - Very large Pima storage basket late. Large storage baskets like this were filled to the rim and then a woven plate, or a rock was placed on top. To remove the grain/corn the basket would be tipped to the side to spill out the food.

It did originally have a lid which is included and shown in some of the photos but it is in extremely poor condition. The basketry covered creamer itself is in excellent condition with just a few loose threads around the handle. It measures approximately 3” tall at the highest point and the diameter is 4” at the widest point. Comes from my grandmother’s Indian basket collection which she is slowly selling. Large antique Polychrome Apache Native American Indian figural basket 16" x 2.5" - Found this at a local estate sale. Measures approx. 16" in dia. and stands approx. 2 1/2" high. It has some color of red and I do believe above the red at one time it was yellow. You can see more of the yellow color on the outside. Yellow is pretty much faded away on the inside and the red is weak. The last 3 photos are of the outside. There are a number of band loss on the outside rim and some band loss is places on the inside of the basket. I've shown the worst in the photos. Nice as it is or restore it if you want.

Small Antique Tlingit Native American Rattle Top Basket- Alaska-c.1890 - It's decorated with a dark brown and tan pattern. If you look at photo's #6 and 7, you'll see that there's a number written in black. It may be a museum number. Dates back to the late 1800's. The lid rattles when you shake it.

Antique Native American Basket Folk Art Hand Made Coiled Pine Needle Bowl 5”X4.5 - This little oval basket/bowl is in excellent condition. It came from an estate in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in the 1970s. It is made of bunches of pine needles sewn together with heavy black twine or cord. It measures approx. 5” long, 4.5” wide and 1.5” high. The lady who owned it told it was made by Native Americans, but I don’t remember the tribe. She also collected other Native American artifacts like a huge Navajo blanket that I also have. I just put the basket on a shelf with all my other baskets, so it wouldn’t get damaged. I have taken close up pics of any areas of concern. There is only one place where the twine is broken and the rest looks pretty great.

Looks to be c1890-1920s and it is made on a coiled foundation of wider willow rods which are much different than the more narrow rods of the western Apache, they are pounded to make the coil appear flat. This group was collected by a family back in the 30s or 40s I was told, in the 70s the daughter wanted an appraisal and got it from Mr. Munn, there were many baskets, I picked these cause I think they are California, but I do not know if these baskets are the ones on appraised, there were actually 3 pages of appraisals but I was only given this one. The tray has been busted out in the edge of bottom, and the low basket has had the same, something too heavy inside? Rare 19Th C Inuit Nat Am Antique Sm Woven Sweet Grass Basket, Red Sidewall Motif - It was found in eastern, coastal Maine along with other thin-walled, finely woven sweet grass gathering/storage baskets in a grouping of over a half-dozen different forms. This particular basket, is exceptionally well-preserved, less a small interruption along its woven top rim, which is now very slightly frayed and unraveled.
Early-Mid 20Th C Nat Am Micmac, Ash/Sweet Grass Porcupine Basket, Penobscot, Me - It was produced by the Micmac people from the Penobscot Bay, Maine region. The bottom of the basket, as well as the woven sidewalls are all nearly intact and only suffer minimal breaks and/or loss. The sidewalls are punctuated with twisted, protruding highs (raised cleats) of the woven sweet grass.

Large Vintage Alaska Native Indian Eskimo Grass Bark Berry Basket Fine Woven - Vintage tightly woven Tlingit or Eskimo made berry basket. Surely made in the late 1800’s to turn of the century, which is early for anything in this condition used for utilitarian purposes by the indigenous peoples of Alaska. There are remnants or orange and black pigment in geometrical designs throughout the basket. Appears to be made from beach grass and cedar bark. I’m assuming this is for berries, but could also be used for clams or herring with the filtration holes throughout the midsection. In excellent condition with no issues, damage or soiling. Large 1800’s Tlingit Spruce Root Fine Woven Decorative Mat - Coaster “Alaska” - 19th century meaning the 1800’s finely woven Tlingit spruce root decorative mat with geometric dyed design. Exceptional quality and done by an expert basket weaver. There is a clean break and a small piece that came off the rim, but is included, and could be fixed/restored with rubber cement. There is no other loss and minimal soiling. This is 100% original and hasn’t been cleaned or altered. Probably made in the late 1800’s for the early introduction of tourism to southeast Alaska.

Think about the years of use this basket has had and the berries, spruce tips, water, etc., that it may have carried. If only baskets could talk, I’m sure this would be full of history and interesting stories. The basket has heavy soiling, but has never been cleaned. Up for sale is this very fine and tightly woven exquisite Pima basket. I counted 13 rows of coil on the bottom in radius and 38 coils from the bottom to the top.
