I acquired the effigy from a collector in the late 1970's who had a top-shelf collection of Bering Sea Eskimo artifacts. This was the pride of his collection and rarely have I seen an effigy of this quality entirely intact outside a museum. When you hold the effigy in your right hand, you can feel a wear groove from years of the Eskimo's thumb rubbing the whale bone. One of many features indicating its authenticity. The front of the hammer is flat and the back of the hammer is carved to a point. This hammer was likely attached to a skin and bone/wood handle. Most likely used as an ice chipping hammer. The sides of the hammer head appear to have a fish hook carved into them. The underside of the hammer appears to have a measuring or centering mark etched into it. The eagle has one foot without carved talons which was missed by me(and apparently by Glen and the museum) when I purchased it new from the museum on Haida Gwaii. Lovely piece though. I see 2 minor rubs which you can see in the pictures. There are no cracks or chips There were 2 price stickers on this piece which left a shadow on the pole. I didn't try to clean off the residue for fear I'd damage the piece. The pole is in as purchased condition and displayed in a glass curio in a non-smoking home.

The Stevenses were probably already traveling prior to heading to Canada as the leaf that's missing from the book precedes the diary's first date, which shows they left Nashville July 22, 1869 to head to Boston, and arrived in Dorchester the evening of the 28th.
Vintage Inuit Soapstone Carving of Seal & Seal Hunter Signed by Davidee Aculiak - This soapstone carving is by the Inuit artist Davidee Acuniak. It depicts a seal on one side and a hunter on the other. The bottom of the piece is signed and I see 5211. There is a sticker over what may be other letters or numbers that reads "canada eskimo art esquimou" as seen in the third and fourth photos. The flat base is 4", it is 5" across at the longest points and 4.25" high at the highest point, and the depth is approx. 1". Sold as shown. Canadian Inuit Carved Stone Sculpture of Figure Holding Child Inuktitut Signed - An impressive, large 20th century Canadian Inuit carved stone sculpture. Adult figure holding child in igloo enclosure. Measures approx. 8.5"h x 11"w x 9.5"d. Weighs over 26 lbs! In good pre owned condition, just displaying some stray surface scratches, as well as natural cracks and internal fractures in the stone, including a large natural fissure to the sculpture's underside - see pictures. Incised signature in Inuktitut syllabics on underside, possibly ᑲᓚᐅ ᐅᑲᐃᑐ (Kalau Ukaitu), with Canadian Eskimo Art sticker.

Inuit Native Stone Carved Seal Green Eskimo Fetish Serpentine Steatite Soapstone - An unsigned green stone carved seal. The stone is quite hard, and does not seem to scratch with the fingernail, it is most likely Serpentine, although it could be Steatite or other hard stone. Presumably older Native Inuit, although exact age and cultural affiliation are unknown.
