S.S. Central America: 1855 Kellogg Restrike $50 PCGS Gem UNC (Box & COA) - These 2.5 ounce gold coins were produced in commemoration of the S.S. Central America's voyage and unfortunate end in 1857. The California Historical Society went through great lengths to closely replicate the original Kellogg $50 proofs by creating dies transferred from the originals, using gold from Kellogg and Co. ingots found in the shipwreck, and striking them with a press from the San Francisco mint. An original Kellogg $50 proof would cost you the better part of $1 million. These replicas present a reasonable alternative. Note that the coin has some toning. Alaska Tripple Creek, Native Gold 1 DWT & Die Trial in Silver, MS65/MS68 HR6 - Never sold before together and on eBay is this set of Alaska Tripple Creek Gold and Silver tokens. The silver die trial is struck prior to striking the final gold token for testing purposes on an antique drop hammer press. The gold and silver come directly from the Tripple Creek and is purchased from the panners and miners directly, then melted and refined into these blank planchets. The crude dies are hand engrave, and/or stamped. This would make a great matched pair in super high grades certified by ICG. Mintage numbers show in the reference on these as only 16 in silver struck and 20 in solid gold. Gold purity/assayed shows .9169 fine. Extremely low mintages.
