Ref: Munt. 23 var; ex. Nomisma
auction Diameter: 25mm Weight: 2.82 gr. VF+ Rodrigo Borgia had four children Cesare, Giovanni (Juan) afterwards duke of Gandia Lucrezia, and Gioffre by his mistress Giovanna. After being elected Pope in 1492, he
made them legitimate and lavished them with offices and riches. Cesare became a Cardinal and later Commander of the Papal Army. Pope Alexander arranged several marriages for Lucrezia that advanced the Borgia political position including Giovanni Sforza (Lord of Pesaro), Alfonso of Aragon (Duke of Bisceglie), and Alfonso I d'Este (Duke of Ferrara). When Sforza lost power his marriage was annulled by the Pope due to "impotence". The Duke of Bisceglie was likely murdered by Cesare Borgia. It was rumored that Lucrezia and her brother Cesare were lovers. Pope Alexander's favorite mistress in later life was the beautiful Giulia Farnese ("Giulia la Bella"), wife of an Orsini. The reputed nepotism, murders, mayhem, and libertinism of the Borgia Papacy were often cited by Martin Luther and other leaders as reasons for the Protestant Reformation. As a life-long coin collector, I offer this coin from my carefully selected personal collection.
