This jar has an ovoid body with a flattish shoulder sitting on a foot with a recessed base. The body is made of a higher fired tan stoneware and wheel thrown. The neck and rim is trumpet form. Overall, the shape is curvilinear and classic Song. The top glaze is russet colored with darker forms throughout and iridescent. The iridescence and mottled forms is created with a dark brown underglaze. This is a standard Song Dynasty technique used to create the exceptional glazes in that period. Additional iridescence is created by the oxidized glaze surface. The base has a deep foot typically seen in the later Song Dynasty. This is a very well potted and expertly glazed example. Would have been used for storing essences. For reference to an almost identical glaze type see Robert Mowry’s 1997 Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers. Nigel Wood in his book Chinese Glazes, University of Pennsylvania Press, has an excellent discussion of these wares. The jar is in excellent condition for being nearly a thousand years old. It does have two rim chips which is probably why it ended up in the ground. It shows evidence of use and burial. The interior rim is worn from a stopper and the rim shows wear. Under 40X magnification the glaze surface is covered in tiny use wear scratches concentrating around the finish, rim and widest part of the body. The piece exhibits lots of evidence of having seen long term burial with manganese and other crystallization all over the piece but particularly in the unglazed areas such as the base. The glaze has also nicely oxidized. The piece is notable for its vessel form, small size, quality of potting and glazing and for its russet glaze. Provenience: An Old Delaware Estate Dimensions: Height 4 3/8 inches (36.5 cm), Widest Diameter (at body center) 2 3/4 inches (7 cm), Rim Diameter 1 5/8 inches (4.1 cm), Foot Diameter 2 1/8 inches (5.4 cm).
