Item:372497452255Chinese Southern Song (11th-12th Century) Brown Glaze Ceramic Foo Lion Figure Rarely seen Song Dynasty ceramic figural Foo Lion. This lion is depicted sitting with what appear to be young under the front paws, with the head turned to the left. Beautiful brown glaze with all the pitting and imperfections expected on a Song Dynasty period piece. The base has worn smooth from use. The glaze is nicely oxidized. Under 40X magnification you can see manganese and other crystallization particularly in the unglazed areas. This indicated that the piece was buried though not in a harsh environment. This figural is in near perfect condition with no cracks, chips or hairlines. The only degradation is due to its age and conditions it has experience. This piece is notable as a figural, being the depiction of a foo lion and for its condition, particularly considering its age. Provenience: An Old Tucson Estate Dimensions: Height 2 3/4 inches (7 cm), Width 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm). Depth 1 3/8 inches (3.5 cm), Foot Diameter 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm).
