It is wheel thrown and has a gray/brown paste. This jar has an overall barrel form body with a wide rim for easy access. The vessel has a wide foot with a recessed base. Just below the rim are two opposing small handles for hanging. The glaze is dark brown over a layer of white glaze which gives the piece a luster since the light is reflected back through the upper glaze and a classic glaze in the later Song Dynasty. This is a very well potted (thin walled) and expertly glazed example. The vessel has extreme luster since the piece was over fired (the temperature was allowed to get a little high) and some air made it into the firing. The haze on one side was due to air getting to the vessel during firing and then further eroded when the vessel was in the ground. The vessel would have been used for storing pastes. For reference to an almost identical glaze type see Robert Mowry’s 1997 Hare’s Fur, Tortoiseshell, and Partridge Feathers. Nigel Wood in his book Chinese Glazes, University of Pennsylvania Press, has an excellent discussion of these wares. The jar is in excellent condition for being nearly a thousand years old. There are no chips, cracks or hairlines. It shows evidence of use and burial. Under 40X magnification the glaze surface is covered in tiny use wear scratches concentrating around the finish, rim and widest part of the body. The piece exhibits lots of evidence of having seen long term burial with manganese and other crystallization all over the piece but particularly in the unglazed areas such as the base and on the area where the glaze was oxidized during firing. The glaze is nicely oxidized. The piece is notable for its vessel form, large size and quality of potting.
