Item:223204611351Chinese Qing Dynasty 18th Century Alms Bowl Buddha Figure Wonderfully detailed 18th century gesso and painted wood alms bowl Buddha figure. This figure was hand carved (you can see the adze cutting on the base), covered in gesso and then painted brown. The detail of the carving is exceptional. The form of headdress, the robe style and form of production date it to the 1700s. The Buddha is shown seated with arms bent at elbows, holding an alms bowl at chest level. The figure signifies compassion and caring for all beings. There is an offering hole in the back and it still has the offering in it wrapped in red paper. This piece has been in continual use since the 18th century which explains the wear shown over the complete piece. The figure is in good condition for its age and use. It is amazing that the piece has not cracked which may be the result of being made of a denser exotic wood than other figures. This is an exceptional figure in the detail of the work and the amount of remaining paint and gesso for its age. Figures of alms bowl Buddha’s are harder to find but signify an important aspect of Buddhist belief. Dimensions: Height 7 3/4 inch (19.68 cm), Greatest Depth 1 3/4 inch (4.45 cm), Greatest Width 2 7/8 inch (7.3 cm).
