A beautiful, circular, porcelain Chinese Snuff Bottle; we have been told it may date to the Hongxian period (1916- 1920), but we cannot be sure.  (Please see the signature mark on the bottle base).  It is skilfully hand-painted in traditional blue, with red spot colouring.  The design shows a statesman (possibly an Emperor?) accompanied by warriors on horseback; in the background is an erupting volcano.   The bottle is in perfect condition, though it has no stopper or cap.  It has a flawless, high glaze and offers a lovely, smooth, tactile weight in the palm.   It stands 6.5cm high X 6cm in diameter. T he designs on Chinese snuff bottles are often inspired by myths and legends; they are not merely intended as bottle ornaments. These themes include t he world of invisible, the unreal, epics and Chinese mythology, represented by mythological creatures, copied from ancient paintings.   They can represent Asiatic and Chinese heritage, Buddhism and Taoism.  This bottle itself depicts what seems to be a mythological scene.

Other designs are inspired by the world of visible nature, such as animals and plants, mountain landscapes, rivers and figures.
