The form of this jar is a large ovoid with a flat bottom, tall neck and out turned rim. The bottom half was mold formed and the top half was coil slow wheel formed. The walls are quite thin and the vessel is light weight for its size. I believe this is an original Han period vessel because of the method of production and the crystallization seen on the surface. The crystallization will not wash off even with scrubbing and had molecularly formed with the vessel clays. Under 200 power magnification you can see the intermingling of the clays and the crystals that formed while the piece was in the ground for nearly 2000 years. The piece was found in a shipping box with other ceramics brought from China to Delaware in the mid to early 1800s so the piece is at least that old. There were jars made for overseas trade in the 17th and 18th centuries but I do not believe this is one of those later vessels. 17th and 18th century vessels have accretions that can be taken off with water and scrubbing leaving a plain clay surface and under 200 power magnification the accretion is not intertwined with the clay structure. This jar also has a raised rectangular area on the base with a raised X, a makers mark and sign of quality (that is why the walls are so thin). This vessel is in a great state of preservation though it has some chips on the rim. The body has no cracks or hairlines. I believe that this piece may have been rejected at production because of the rim chips. The piece does not show any wear, particularly scratching, and therefore has seen little use. It was thrown out and buried after production. Therefore, it is in great condition for its age. Despite the rim chips and possibly being a reject this Han Dynasty piece is a great find. If you ever wanted a great old piece at a great price this is it. Dimensions: Height 10 1/8 inches (25.72 cm), Greatest Body Diameter 9 3/4 inches (24.76 cm), Base Diameter 5 inches (12.7 cm), Rim Diameter 4 3/4 inches (12.06 cm).
