Seller: ancient_art4wuz (10,507) 100%, Location: London, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 332530805714 A prehistoric Anatolian marble head of kilia type. Of highly stylised geometric form, the marble head is elliptical, with faintly defined nose and sylphic ears. Mounted on a custom-made stand (height with stand 6.5 cms).Fine condition; a fragment from a larger statue, otherwise intact; Chalcolithic, 3300-2500 BC.UK art market, acquired prior to 2000. Originally from a standing figure, kilia idols are often termed 'stargazers', coming from the obvious backward tilt of the head as if watching over the celestial sphere. This is a good example of an otherwise enigmatic artifact. Though their true purpose is now lost to us, the unnatural form of the kilia suggests some manner of supernatural representation and their lasting popularity suggests they maintained an important meaning to the inhabitants of Bronze Age Anatolia down the centuries. Excavations in the ancient city of Troy have revealed relatively few stargazer figures entirely preserved, whereas fragments (mostly heads) were far more prevalent. It appears that pieces such as this were being preserved as magical relics by the inhabitants of the city, remnants from a long forgotten past.Length: 3.8CM Type: Idols, Colour: Beige/Tan, Culture: Greek, Material: Marble
