Item:383066260124Fragment size 6 x 3 (measurement from top width) inches Frame size 11 x 9 x 1 1/8 inches Coptic weaving, 6-7th cent, linen/wool tapestry band, depicts multi-colored design of roundels containing stylized designs interspersed w/stylized bows, red on black, between two borders containing multi-colored leaves, red, blue, green and white on a yellow background (description from 1993 Chicago auction catalogue when I purchased it). Textile is attached to a piece of modern tightly woven taupe colored linen. See item #628 from the original auction catalogue where I purchased it. The slightly tinted green glass was removed for the photography of the images because of the reflections, but was put back and sealed in the back. The black painted (was shiny) veneer of the solid wood frame is chipped in two places. The largest chip is 3/8ths of an inch. Both chips are located in the same place at the lower right and lower left of the sides of the frame. The corners of the frame are match and very stable (not racked). The fragment looks remarkable for an approximately 1400-1500 year old piece of woven linen. Many Coptic textiles have survived because they were preserved in the dry desert tombs of Egypt (and at my house for 24 years) .The name Copt derives from the Arabic word "Qibt" for Egyptian, The term "Copt" originally referred to the native Egyptians, as opposed to the Greek or Arab invaders. Thus, Coptic textiles are the products of the Egyptians, who may or may not have been Christian, and who lived in the beginning of the Christian era. Note: Although, I have said no international shipping, I will send this with insurance but it will cost at least $80. Without the frame it is much less. Email me your country and I’ll give you the shipping cost. State with or without frame. SHIPPING IS VIA USPS PRIORITY INSURED MAIL FOR THE CONTINENTAL US ONLY. NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING.
