c. Late Woodland and Mississippian Culture
c. 700-1400 AD
This ancient Native American Stone Knife measures about 3.70" (94 mm) x 1.38” (35 mm) and was a surface find in Madison Co. Illinois. It is made from chert has an old museum or private collection # 6-14; 6-R-11; 82-91 written in black ink on the flint knife.
It was flaked so that the top of the knife is flat so the user could apply pressure to the blade edge. It has authentic mineralization and a gorgeous patina from spending hundreds of years in the ground. This mineralization, find location, and style of this knife suggest it was made during the late Woodland period or Mississippian Culture in southern Illinois around 700 to 1400 AD.
