This is a delightful reproduction of a cement Garden Ornament from the amazing folk art studio of ~Cody Foster & Co.~ (formerly known as ~Backporch Friends~). It is part of a wondrous series of fanciful Folk Art decorations from the fertile imagination and talented hands of renown American Folk Artist, Cody Foster. It is designed as a concrete casting of a white Pigeon with a fabulous "Retro" look. Vintage garden tools and lawn ornaments are one of today's hottest collectibles, and this beauty would make a wonderful addition to your home or garden. The Pigeon measures almost 8½-inches high and 6½-inches wide. Her round base is 3¾-inches in diameter. She is artfully painted to give the appearance of age and elements ~ as if her original paint has worn by the weather to a lovely patina. There is a wonderful chipped and crackled effect to the paint. Her body is warm ivory. She has orange feet and an orange and black beak. Her bright eyes are painted black. She perches on a base that is painted greenish-grey and molded to resemble a mossy rock. The paint is worn and chipped in all the right places, and she looks as if she's been standing guard in the garden for many, many years. The Pigeon stands with her head turned over her right shoulder as if getting ready to preen. Her wings are folded, and her feet are firmly planted on her rock. The mold from which she was cast was exceptionally good. Upon close examination, you can see an amazing amount of detail in this piece ~ her wings and tail show intricate feathers, as does her plump breast. You can see and feel her musculature and the texture of her feathers. Even her toes are rough and wrinkled like a real bird’s foot. The paint is worn and chipped so that the grey cement shows through. (She weighs 2 pounds.) This is a delightful & whimsical vintage piece that would fit beautifully into a romantic, "Shabby Chic," "Cottage Chic," or "Garden Style" home. She looks especially striking mixed with other shabby, chippy pieces; and her display possibilities are endless. She looks terrific perched on a desk, dresser or shelf. She makes a lovely spring harbinger in an Easter or May Day tableau. And, don’t hesitate to tuck her amongst a row of potted plants. This imported piece is brand new and unused. It is in MINT condition and ready for your decorating projects. Lovingly distressed, her "worn" finish gives this ~Cement Garden Pigeon~ a very "antique" or "vintage" feel and appearance. Cody's work blends beautifully with real antique and vintage collectibles. Please see my other listings for additional pieces from this remarkable collection. "As a little boy, Foster had spent much of his spare time with his grandmothers, both of whom created crafts as gifts for family and friends. Only occasionally did they sell to shops or at craft shows, but when they did, Foster was usually in tow. They kept their grandson out of mischief by teaching him to thread a needle and sew rag dolls. 'I remember sitting at this one really boring craft show and [beginning to doodle],' he says. "When I got home, I made Sunshine Suzy-Q, my first doll. Foster began selling his creations by the time he was a sophomore in high school, doing craft shows in small communities in northern Nebraska and in larger areas such as Omaha and Rapid City, S.D. He admits to playing hooky from school to get ready for the shows. As a high school senior, he was approached by a wholesale rep who wanted to represent him; the rep quickly got him into his first wholesale show in metropolitan Kansas City just two weeks after his high school graduation. Cody's designs have become nationally recognized. His work has been featured in Country Living magazine, the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City, and in high-end boutiques, museum shops, and department stores across the country. His work is prized by designers and collectors alike, for their unique and whimsical charm." ~ © 2002 College of Business Administration, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
