"As a little boy, Foster had spent much of his spare time with his grandmothers, both of whom created crafts as gifts for family and friends. Only occasionally did they sell to shops or at craft shows, but when they did, Foster was usually in tow. They kept their grandson out of mischief by teaching him to thread a needle and sew rag dolls. 'I remember sitting at this one really boring craft show and [beginning to doodle],' he says. "When I got home, I made Sunshine Suzy-Q, my first doll. Foster began selling his creations by the time he was a sophomore in high school, doing craft shows in small communities in northern Nebraska and in larger areas such as Omaha and Rapid City, S.D. He admits to playing hooky from school to get ready for the shows. As a high school senior, he was approached by a wholesale rep who wanted to represent him; the rep quickly got him into his first wholesale show in metropolitan Kansas City just two weeks after his high school graduation. Cody's designs have become nationally recognized. His work has been featured in Country Living magazine, the Museum of American Folk Art in New York City, and in high-end boutiques, museum shops, and department stores across the country. His work is prized by designers and collectors alike, for their unique and whimsical charm." ~ © 2002 College of Business Administration, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
