Seller: howardturner (748) 100%, Location: Ridgefield, Connecticut, Ships to: US, Item: 253859663022 Molded blown glass vessels like this one were made for Jews and Christians in Byzantine times either as tokens for pilgrims as they visited holy sites in Jerusalem or for use in burial rites. This translucent amber glass Jewish pilgrim jar was made in the 6th or 7th century AD. it stands 3 1/2" tall and is 3" in diamenter at its widest point. The base is 1 1/2" in diameter. The rim is aboit 1 1.2" in diameter. It was found in Jerusalem The mouth and the neck are free blown, the globular body ii blown into a mold with designs in raised relief. There are four designs inscribed in the jar---1. a concentric lozenges, 2. a menorah flanked by shofar and lulay, 3.an arch, 4. a stylized tree. The rim is folded inward with a flaring mouth and short neck. It is in good condition, as found, with some rough edges on the base and the inside of the of the neck opening. Encrusted, but where tested, comes off easily so chose to leave as purchased/found. From private California collector in 2003 Material: glass
