This probe is attached to the refrigeration system copper tubing on the left side of the Ultra-2 via a small worm clamp. It's purpose is to monitor the temperature of the hot Freon gas as it is pumped through the system and returning from the cooling drums. The probe is designed to warn you if the refrigeration system is getting too hot which is almost always due to a dirty air filter or dirty condenser (the "radiator" at the back of the machine). If the probe is working properly and the refrigeration system is too hot, you will see a warning on the display, "Filter Needs Cleaning". Obviously, remove and clean the filter immediately. If you remove the filter and notice the condenser fins are also dirty, shut down the machine and clean the condenser as well. Clean the filter in warm soapy water and use a vacuum cleaner and brush to clean the condenser. If the warning is ignored, the heat increases and the warning display becomes, "!!!Filter Needs Cleaning!!!" and the main control board will shut down the refrigeration system to prevent damage. If this probe fails, you can receive one of two messages: 1. Hot Gas Sensor Open. This indicates the resistance from the probe circuit has gone to infinity and the probe is either unplugged or has failed. Turn off and unplug the machine, remove the left side panel, locate the probe and follow the wire back to ensure the white connector is plugged in. If it is, the probe has failed and needs to be replaced. 2. Hot Gas Sensor Shorted. This indicates the probe has failed in that the resistance from the probe circuit has gone to zero. Turn off and unplug the machine, remove the left side panel, locate the probe and carefully examine the probe to determine if it is extremely hot. DO NOT TOUCH IT -- extremely hot means over 250 degrees! When you get this error message the probe has failed and must be replaced. Replacing the probe is easy -- turn off and unplug the machine. Ensure the machine is on a stable work surface. Remove the left panel (loosen the two 1/4" hex head screws under the panel and then pull the panel out from the bottom and then pull down.) Locate the probe. Ensure it is not hot. Loosen the worm clamp with a straight blade screwdriver or 1/4" nut driver and slip the probe out from under the clamp. Trace back the black wire and unplug the white plug (you might need to remove the right panel for access). Install the new probe by reversing these steps. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN the worm clamp on the new probe -- make it only snug enough to hold the probe paralell to and against the copper pipe where you found the original probe. Replace the side panel and tighten the two screws that hold the panel in place.
