I purchased this at the Haring Pop Art store in the late 80s. Has been in storage in my parent’s Atlanta home since then! Free South Africa by Keith Haring, unsigned offset lithograph, printed 1985, circulation 20,000. Overall dimensions of offset lithograph are 48 x 48 inches. The condition of this piece is rated A: Excellent, with minor signs of handling and age.

Offset lithograph on glazed poster paper. Due to the size and thickness of the paper, it does show signs of handling and some slight creases. Haring used his art to bring awareness and solidarity to many issues in the United States, including apartheid in South Africa. Fully cataloged in the 2002 book "Keith Haring Texting Posters" published by Prestel.

Artwork description and analysis: Free South Africa was a political response to the apartheid conditions that still existed in South Africa. The black figures are intentionally much larger than the white figures to convey the post-colonial irony of the white minority continuing to suppress the native black majority.

The use of black lines gives the characters a dynamic sense of movement. The black outline also expresses a heightened awareness of more psychological elements - such as the halo surrounding the restraining collar around the black figure's neck.

Artists such as Haring created popular protest poster campaigns, using easy-to-understand images that could be circulated on posters, T-shirts, and postcards. Combine global public pressure from celebrities, politicians and citizens to raise awareness and affect change in South Africa.

This wave of protests eventually led to the release of Nelson Mandela—lawyer/activist and 30-year prisoner of the South African government—from prison and his election as president. About a decade later, in 1994, President Mandela ended apartheid for good.
