Philip José Farmer, a prolific and popular science fiction writer who shocked readers in the 1950s by depicting sex with aliens and challenged conventional pieties of the genre with caustic fables set on bizarre worlds of his own devising, died Wednesday. He was 91 and lived in Peoria, Ill. His official Web site, pjfarmer.com, announced his death, saying he had “passed away peacefully in his sleep.” Mr. Farmer’s blend of intellectual daring and pulp-fiction prose found a worldwide audience. His more than 75 books have been translated into 22 languages and published in more than 40 countries. Though he wrote many short stories, he was best known for his many series of multiple novels. These sprawling, episodic works gave him room to explore the nuances of a provocative premise while indulging his taste for lurid, violent action. In his Riverworld series Mr. Farmer imagined a river millions of miles long on a distant planet where virtually everyone who has died on Earth is physically reborn, strong and vital, and given a second chance to make something of life. In the first of the series, “To Your Scattered Bodies Go,” a reborn character discovers that his “skin was smooth, and the muscles of his belly were ridged, and his thighs were packed with strong young muscles.” “He no longer had the body of the enfeebled and sick 69-year-old man who had been dying only a moment ago. And the hundred or so scars were gone.” Dig deeper into the moment. Special offer: Subscribe for $1 a week. In his Dayworld series, an overpopulation crisis on Earth has been relieved by a technical fix: each person spends one day a week awake and the other six days in suspended animation. In his World of Tiers series, mad demigods create pocket universes for their own amusement, only to face rebellion from their putative creatures. In a genre known for prolific writers, Mr. Farmer’s output was famously prodigious. At one point in the 1970s he had 11 different series in various stages of completion. Even some of his admirers said he wrote too much too fast. The critic Leslie Fiedler said that his work was sometimes sloppily written but added that was a small price to pay for the breadth of Mr. Farmer’s imagination. Mr. Farmer made no apologies for his excesses. “Imagination,” he said, “is like a muscle. I found out that the more I wrote, the bigger it got.” Editors’ Picks Kathleen Andrews Dies at 84; Helped Give Ziggy and Others Their Start Those We’ve Lost Big Candy Is Angry Continue reading the main story Philip José Farmer was born Jan. 26, 1918, in North Terre Haute, Ind. He grew up in Peoria, where his father, a civil engineer, was a supervisor for the power company. A voracious reader as a boy, Mr. Farmer said he resolved to become a writer in the fourth grade. After washing out of flight training in World War II, he went to work in a steel mill while attending Bradley University in Peoria at night and writing in his spare time. Image Philip José Farmer in 1976. Philip José Farmer in 1976. Credit...Associated Press His first success came in 1952 with a story called “The Lovers,” about a man seduced by an alien with an unusual reproductive system. The story was rejected by the two leading science fiction editors; both said that its graphic description of interspecies sex made them physically ill. Published in a pulp magazine called Startling Stories, the story won Mr. Farmer his first Hugo as “most promising new writer.” Emboldened, he quit his job to become a full-time writer. Entering a publisher’s contest, he won the $4,000 first prize for a novel that held the germ of his Riverworld series. But an unscrupulous editor failed to deliver the money, and the manuscript was lost. Struggling financially, Mr. Farmer left Peoria in 1956 to become a technical writer. He spent the next 14 years working for defense contractors, from Syracuse, N.Y., to Los Angeles, while continuing to write science fiction on the side. With the loosening of social taboos in the 1960s, Mr. Farmer emerged as a major force in the genre. In a 1966 story set on Riverworld, one of the resurrected is a resentful Jesus, angry that he had been deceived about the nature of the afterlife. Mr. Farmer won a Hugo for his 1967 novella “Riders of the Purple Wage,” a satire on a cradle-to-grave welfare state, written as an exuberant pastiche of James Joyce’s “Ulysses.” His 1971 novel “To Your Scattered Bodies Go” also won the Hugo. After moving back to Peoria in 1970, Mr. Farmer published 25 new works over the next decade. A 1975 novel, “Venus on the Half-Shell,” created a stir beyond the genre. The jacket and title page identified the author only as Kilgore Trout, a fictional character who appears as an unappreciated science fiction writer in several of Kurt Vonnegut’s novels. Although Mr. Farmer claimed he had permission for this playful hoax, Vonnegut was not amused to learn that some reviewers not only concluded that he had written “Venus on the Half-Shell” but that it was a worthy addition to the Vonnegut canon. Mr. Farmer also wrote full-length, mock-scholarly “biographies” of Tarzan and Doc Savage, two of the pulp heroes whose stories had inspired him to become a writer. Mr. Farmer had his detractors. “A humdrum toiler in the fields of science fiction,” Christopher Lehmann-Haupt wrote in The New York Times in 1972. But Mr. Fiedler saw in Mr. Farmer’s approach to storytelling a “gargantuan lust to swallow down the whole cosmos, past, present and to come, and to spew it out again.” In the Riverworld series, for example, Mr. Farmer resurrected not just historical personages like Samuel Clemens and the explorer Richard Francis Burton but legendary figures like Odysseus and Gilgamesh. He is survived by his wife, Bette, his son, Philip, his daughter, Kristen, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. An agnostic from the age of 14, Mr. Farmer was ambivalent about humanity’s hunger for life after death. “I can’t see any reason why such miserable, unhappy, vicious, stupid, conniving, greedy, narrow-minded, self-absorbed beings should have immortality," he said in Science Fiction Review in 1975. But he added, “When considering individuals, then I feel, yes, this person, that person, certainly deserves another chance.” Life on this planet, he said “is too short, too crowded, too hurried, too beset." n 1973, the science-fiction writer Philip José Farmer, who has died aged 91, published Venus on the Half-Shell, under the name Kilgore Trout. Trout was a recurring character in Kurt Vonnegut's novels, living in poverty while selling stories to porn magazines. Vonnegut's model was the writer Theodore Sturgeon, but the description would also have fitted Farmer. Blessed with an overflowing and playful imagination, he faced adversity in finding a steady outlet, producing 75 novels for 25 different publishers. Despite setbacks, he had a boundless creative energy allied to a friendly openness, which made him a favourite both of his fellow writers and the fraternity of science-fiction fandom. Farmer introduced an adult sexuality into a genre previously pitched to adolescents, and exploiting sci-fi's flexibility, indulged his gift for literary pastiche, best seen in stories such as The Jungle Rot Kid on the Nod, first published in 1968, a Tarzan story written as if by William Burroughs rather than Edgar Rice Burroughs. This mix of sex, pulp and literature was first showcased in a series of novels published in 1968 and 1969 by a pornographer, Essex House. But it reached a wider audience with the Wold Newton series, including Tarzan Alive (1972) and Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life (1973). These pastiches of heroes of popular literature, ranging from Tarzan to Phileas Fogg and Melville's Ishmael, were linked by the assumption that the meteorite that landed in the Yorkshire village of Wold Newton in 1795 was radioactive, creating genetic mutations. His best-known work, the Riverworld series, in which everyone who has ever lived is resurrected along the banks of the million-mile river, allowed Farmer to play with real characters, among them the explorer Sir Richard Burton and Mark Twain. By the time of the "new wave" of speculative fiction in the 1960s, Farmer was nearly 50, but his story, Riders of the Purple Wage, in Harlan Ellison's seminal 1967 anthology Dangerous Visions, won him a second Hugo award. The first had come for his debut sci-fi story, The Lovers. Its straightforward approach to sex between humans and aliens "nauseated" the field's leading editor, John W Campbell, who rejected it but, when published in Startling Stories, it won Farmer the 1953 Hugo as best newcomer. Farmer delivered a talk entitled Science Fiction and the Kinsey Report at the World SF Convention when he accepted the award. The story had such a profound effect on the field that eight years later Robert Heinlein dedicated Stranger in a Strange Land, which explores similar themes, to him. Farmer had quit his job in a steel mill to write full time. His first novel, Owe for the Flesh - which introduced the Riverworld concept - won a $4,000 prize sponsored by Shasta, a specialist sci-fi publisher. But the publisher embezzled Farmer's paperback advance, intended to fund the prize and hardcover publication, to publish another book, which flopped. The novel never appeared, and Farmer lost his house and was forced to go back to work. Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Farmer grew up in Peoria, Illinois, a city often cited as the quintessence of middle America. His interest in science fiction began aged six, when he saw a zeppelin passing overhead. After excelling at sport in high school, he entered the University of Missouri to study journalism in 1936, but left when his father's business collapsed, and took a job repairing power lines. Three years later he received a writing scholarship to local Bradley University. In 1941, he returned to Missouri, to study Greek, but went back to Peoria to elope with Elizabeth Andre. He then joined the army air corps, but failed flight school soon after Pearl Harbor. He took a job at a steel mill in Peoria while waiting to be drafted and worked there for 11 years. In 1949 he sold his first story, to Adventure magazine, and the following year finally received his degree from Bradley. After the collapse of the Shasta prize, he began another career as a technical writer for General Electric in Syracuse, New York. The family moved to Arizona and then California as he wrote for aerospace companies including Motorola and McDonnell-Douglas, while producing sci-fi stories, including a series about a priest, in which he approached religious cosmology. In 1966 he expanded one of his Father John Carmody stories into the novel Night of Light. It was here Jimi Hendrix first encountered the phrase "purple haze". Farmer's first published sci-fi novel, The Green Odyssey, appeared in 1957. His second, Flesh (1960), again approached sexual themes. The Lovers, expanded to novel length, appeared the following year. Fire in the Night (1962), about an interracial affair, drew on Farmer's years in the steel mills. In 1965, The Maker of Universes introduced his World of Tiers series, which features parallel universes constructed by a far-advanced society. In the same year To Your Scattered Bodies Go, rewritten from the lost Riverworld manuscript of Owe for the Flesh, was serialised. When it finally appeared in book form, it won Farmer his third Hugo, in 1972. By then he had been made redundant by McDonnell-Douglas, and moved back to Peoria, finally a full-time writer. He successfully expanded various series, using parody and pastiche and, in 1991, published the first original Doc Savage novel to appear since the death of the pulps, followed in 1999 by an original Tarzan novel. His last solo novel, Up from the Bottomless Pit (2005), dealing with an oil-spill disaster, was serialised in Farmerphile, a fanzine devoted to his work. In 2001 he received the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America grand master prize and a World Fantasy lifetime achievement award. In his introduction to a "best-of" anthology published in 2006, Joe Lansdale called Farmer "the man with the electric brain", and the "most underrated SF writer of all time". At a relatively late age for a novice writer, Philip José Farmer won acclaim for his first science-fiction novella The Lovers (1952), which combined alien biology and sex. It worked so well the American author incorporated the same features into his novels and stories forever after. One of his noteworthy early pieces was "Open to Me, My Sister", whose title gives an idea why it was considered "disgusting" by potential publishers. Not that Farmer's tales all strike the same note. In fact, they include some of the most varied and exotic writing in sci-fi, sometimes crossing over into the fantasy realm. His Father Carmody series of stories in the 1950s features a murderous priest who sorts out theological puzzles on various planets. In his novel The Wind Whales of Ishmael (1971) the sole survivor of Herman Melville's Moby Dick falls through time into a future Earth when the oceans have dried up and primitive people have taken to the skies in airships powered by gas-filled animal bladders. Between 1965 and 1977 he produced an imaginative and humorous series of novels known collectively as World of Tiers, which gained a following. The first in the series, Maker of Universes, begins with mild-mannered professor Robert Wolff walking through a wall into another universe. In a world of stacked environments he must fight his way through various levels to regain his rightful place as ruler (a life he had apparently forgotten during his stay on earth). The world-hopping fun continues in The Gates of Creation but Wolff's ally, the pleasure-loving trickster, Paul Janus Finnegan (also known as Kickaha) comes to steal the reader's interest—to take over as the central character in the rest of the series with A Private Cosmos, Behind the Walls of Terra and The Lavalite World. The series was revised and republished in the early 1980s. Farmer's greatest work. however. is the more serious Riverworld collection (1971–1983), starting with the Hugo Award-winning To Your Scattered Bodies Go. Everyone who has ever lived is resurrected on a planet alongside a mysterious long river. The quest to discover the purpose behind this created world is carried out by real-life figures from earth's history—including Richard Burton (the explorer), Samuel Clemens, King John, Herman Goering, Jack London, and Cyrano de Bergerac—along with fictional personalities, such as Naz, the friendly Neanderthal, as the series continues with The Fabulous Riverboat, The Dark Design, The Magic Labyrinth, Gods of Riverworld and more works by both Farmer and other writers who have joined the fray. Other notable entries in the Farmer oeuvre: • Tarzan Alive: A Definitive Biography of Lord Greystoke (1972), a pretend biography of Edgar Rice Burroughs' fictional apeman, employing Joseph Campbell's ideas about mythology. • The prize-winning, punning novella Riders of the Purple Wage (1967). • Venus on the Half-Shell (1975), which Farmer wrote under the name of Kilgore Trout, an SF-writing character from a novel by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.  Confused yet? There's more. Farmer later wrote some stories as Jonathan Swift Somers III, a character in Venus on the Half-Shell written by Kilgore Trout...or Farmer...or.... • The Unreasoning Mask (1981), a novel that mixes space opera with cosmic speculation, including concepts such as multiverses, human space travel as a carcinogen to be fought by humongous antibodies, an idiot god— hard to follow at times but thought-provoking. • The Dayworld series (1985-90) in which overpopulation has forced every body to be shared by seven people, each taking a turn for a day of every week. • The Wold Newton Family project which tries to tie together many of Farmer's and other authors' works into one grand, chaotic scheme. And lots more. Not everything Farmer does works, but it's fun to watch him try. 'Science Fiction Author. Best know for his “Riverworld” and “World of Tiers” series, he won multiple Hugo awards in his career and was named as the 19th Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 2001. He received his bachelor's degree in English from Bradley University in 1950 and worked as a technical writer for many years. His first success was the novella “The Lovers”, in 1952, which won the Hugo for best New Writer. He then went on to write the story “Owe for the Flesh”, quitting his job to do so, to enter a publishers contest for which he won first prize. But the book was a never published (though it later became the basis for his “Riverworld” series) nor did he receive the prize money, so he returned to technical writing as his main profession. In 1967, he won his second Hugo for the novella “Riders of the Purple Wage”, a takeoff on “Finnigan’s Wake” by Joyce. He returned to full time writing in 1969, and his novel “To Your Scattered Bodies Go” (the first book in the “Riverworld” series) won his third Hugo in 1972. He often inserted himself into his books as a character with the same (P.J.F.) initials. He is also known for his novel “Venus on the Half-Shell” which claimed to have been written by Kurt Vonnegut’s character Kilgore Trout (with Vonnegut’s permission), though Vonnegut did not like the end result. He also wrote about (and in) the Tarzan and Doc Savage series of pulp books. He was credited with over 60 novels and 100 stories among many other writings. Philip José Farmer (January 26, 1918 – February 25, 2009) was an American author known for his science fiction and fantasy novels and short stories.[2] Farmer is best known for his sequences of novels, especially the World of Tiers (1965–93) and Riverworld (1971–83) series. He is noted for the pioneering use of sexual and religious themes in his work, his fascination for, and reworking of, the lore of celebrated pulp heroes, and occasional tongue-in-cheek pseudonymous works written as if by fictional characters. Farmer often mixed real and classic fictional characters and worlds and real and fake authors as epitomized by his Wold Newton family group of books. These tie all classic fictional characters together as real people and blood relatives resulting from an alien conspiracy. Such works as The Other Log of Phileas Fogg (1973) and Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life (1973) are early examples of literary mashup novel. Literary critic Leslie Fiedler compared Farmer to Ray Bradbury as both being "provincial American eccentrics" who "strain at the classic limits of the [science fiction] form," but found Farmer distinctive in that he "manages to be at once naive and sophisticated in his odd blending of theology, pornography, and adventure."[3] Contents 1 Biography 2 Novel sequences 2.1 Riverworld series 2.2 World of Tiers series 3 Literary themes 3.1 Sexual 3.2 Religious 3.3 Pulp heroes 3.4 Pseudonyms 4 Awards and honors 5 Bibliography 6 See also 7 References 8 Sources 9 External links Biography Philip José Farmer and his great-grandson in 1995 Farmer was born in North Terre Haute, Indiana. According to colleague Frederik Pohl, his middle name was in honor of an aunt, Josie.[4] Farmer grew up in Peoria, Illinois, where he attended Peoria High School. His father was a civil engineer and a supervisor for the local power company. A voracious reader as a boy, Farmer said he resolved to become a writer in the fourth grade. He became an agnostic at the age of 14. At age 23, in 1941, he married Bette V. Andre and eventually fathered a son and a daughter. After washing out of flight training in World War II, he went to work in a local steel mill. He continued his education, however, earning a bachelor's degree in English from Bradley University in 1950.[5] Farmer had his first literary success when his novella The Lovers was published by Samuel Mines in Startling Stories, August 1952,[1] which features a sexual relationship between a human and an extraterrestrial. He won a Hugo Award for Best New SF Author or Artist in 1953, the first of three Hugos awards he won in his career. Thus encouraged, he quit his job to become a full-time writer, entered a publisher's contest, and promptly won first prize for a novel, Owe for the Flesh, that contained the germ of his later Riverworld series. But the book was not published and Farmer did not get the $4,000 prize money that was supposed to go to the winner.[6] Literary success did not translate into financial security, so he left Peoria in 1956 to launch a career as a technical writer. He spent the next 14 years working in that capacity for various defense contractors, from Syracuse, New York to Los Angeles, while writing science fiction in his spare time.[5] He won a second Hugo award in 1968, in the category Best Novella, for Riders of the Purple Wage;[7] a pastiche of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake as well as a satire on a futuristic, cradle-to-grave welfare state. Reinvigorated, Farmer became a full-time writer again in 1969.[8] Upon moving back to Peoria in 1970, he entered his most prolific period, publishing 25 books in 10 years. His novel To Your Scattered Bodies Go (a reworked, previously unpublished version of the prize-winning first novel of 20 years before) won him a third Hugo in 1972, for Best Novel.[7] A 1975 novel, Venus on the Half-Shell, created a stir in the larger literary community and media. It purported to be written in the first person by one "Kilgore Trout," a fictional character appearing as an underappreciated science fiction writer in several of Kurt Vonnegut's novels. The escapade did not please Vonnegut when some reviewers not only concluded that it had been written by Vonnegut himself, but that it was a worthy addition to his works. Farmer did have permission from Vonnegut to write the book, though Vonnegut later said he regretted giving permission.[9] Farmer had both critical champions and detractors. Leslie Fiedler proclaimed him "the greatest science fiction writer ever"[10] and lauded his approach to storytelling as a "gargantuan lust to swallow down the whole cosmos, past, present and to come, and to spew it out again."[11] Isaac Asimov praised Farmer as an "excellent science fiction writer; in fact, a far more skillful writer than I am...."[12] But Christopher Lehmann-Haupt dismissed him in The New York Times in 1972 as "a humdrum toiler in the fields of science fiction."[5] In 2001 Farmer won the World Fantasy Award for Life Achievement and the Science Fiction Writers of America made him its 19th SFWA Grand Master in the same year.[7][13] Farmer died on February 25, 2009.[2][14] He was survived by his wife Bette, two children, five grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.[15] Novel sequences Farmer's novelette "Some Fabulous Yonder" was the cover story on the April 1963 issue of Fantastic Riverworld series Main article: Riverworld The Riverworld series follows the adventures of such diverse characters as Richard Francis Burton, Hermann Göring, and Samuel Clemens through a bizarre afterlife in which every human ever to have lived is simultaneously resurrected along a single river valley that stretches over an entire planet. The series consists of To Your Scattered Bodies Go (1971), The Fabulous Riverboat (1971), The Dark Design (1977), The Magic Labyrinth (1980) and Gods of Riverworld (1983). Although Riverworld and Other Stories (1979) is not part of the series as such, it does include the second-published Riverworld story, which is free-standing rather than integrated into one of the novels. The first two Riverworld books were originally published as novellas, "The Day of the Great Shout" and "The Suicide Express," and as a two-part serial, "The Felled Star," in the science fiction magazines Worlds of Tomorrow and If between 1965 and 1967. The separate novelette "Riverworld" ran in Worlds of Tomorrow in January 1966. A final pair of linked novelettes appeared in the 1990s: "Crossing the Dark River" (in Tales of Riverworld, 1992) and "Up the Bright River" (in Quest to Riverworld, 1993). Farmer introduced himself into the series as Peter Jairus Frigate (PJF). The Riverworld series originated in a novel, Owe for the Flesh, written in one month in 1952 as a contest entry. It won the contest, but the book was left unpublished and orphaned when the prize money was misappropriated, and Farmer nearly gave up writing altogether.[16] The original manuscript of the novel was lost, but years later Farmer reworked the material into the Riverworld magazine stories mentioned above. Eventually, a copy of a revised version of the original novel surfaced in a box in a garage and was published as River of Eternity by Phantasia Press in 1983. Farmer's introduction to this edition gives the details of how it all happened.[16] World of Tiers series Main article: World of Tiers The series is set within a number of artificially constructed parallel universes[17] (of which Earth is one), created tens of thousands of years ago by a race of human beings not from Earth who had achieved an advanced level of technology which gave them almost godlike power and immortality. The principal universe in which these stories take place, and from which the series derives its name, consists of an enormous tiered planet, shaped like a stack of disks or squat cylinders, of diminishing radius, one atop the other. The series follows the adventures of several of these godlike humans and several "ordinary" humans from Earth who accidentally travel to these artificial universes. (One of those "ordinary" humans was Paul Janus Finnegan [PJF], who becomes the main character in the series.) The series consists of The Maker of Universes (1965), The Gates of Creation (1966), A Private Cosmos (1968), Behind the Walls of Terra (1970), The Lavalite World (1977) and More Than Fire (1993). Roger Zelazny has mentioned that The World of Tiers was something he had in his mind when he created his Amber series.[18] A related novel is Red Orc's Rage (1991), which does not involve the principal characters of the other books directly, but does provide background information to certain events and characters portrayed in the other novels. This is the most "psychological" of Farmer's novels. Literary themes Sexual Farmer's work often handles sexual themes; some early works were notable for their ground-breaking introduction of such to science fiction literature.[19] His first (with one minor exception) published science fiction story, the novella The Lovers, earned him the Hugo Award for Best New SF Author or Artist in 1953, and is critically recognized as the story that broke the taboo on sex in science fiction.[20] It instantly put Farmer on the literary map.[21] The short story collection Strange Relations (1960) was a notable event in the genre.[19] He was one of three persons to whom Robert A. Heinlein dedicated Stranger in a Strange Land (1961), a novel which explored sexual freedom as one of its primary themes.[22] Moreover, Fire and the Night (1962) is a mainstream novel about an interracial romance; it features sociological and psychosexual twists. In Night of Light (1966), he devised an alien race where aliens have only one mother but several fathers, perhaps because of an unusual or untenable physical position that cannot be reached or continued by two individuals acting alone. Both Image of the Beast and the sequel Blown from 1968–1969 explore group sex, interplanetary travel, and interplay between fictional figures like Herald Childe and real people like Forry Ackerman. In the World of Tiers series he explores Oedipal themes. Religious His work also sometimes contains religious themes. Jesus shows up as a character in both the Riverworld series (in the novelette "Riverworld" but not in the novels, except for the mentioning of him dying early in The Magic Labyrinth) and Jesus on Mars. Night of Light (1957, expanded 1966) takes the rather unholy Father John Carmody on an odyssey on an alien world where spiritual forces are made manifest in the material world. In Flesh (1960) astronauts return to an Earth 800 years in their future dominated by a pagan goddess-worshiping religion. Other examples include the short stories "J.C. on the Dude Ranch", "The God Business", "The Making of Revelation, Part I", and the novels Inside, Outside (1964) (which may or may not be set in Hell) and Traitor to the Living (1973), among many others. Pulp heroes Many of Farmer's works rework existing characters from fiction and history,[2] as in The Wind Whales of Ishmael (1971), a far-future sequel to Herman Melville's Moby-Dick; The Other Log of Phileas Fogg (1973), which fills in the missing time periods from Jules Verne's Around the World in Eighty Days; and A Barnstormer in Oz (1982), in which Dorothy's adult son, a pilot, flies to the Land of Oz by accident. He has often written about the pulp heroes Tarzan and Doc Savage, or pastiches thereof: In his novel The Adventure of the Peerless Peer, Tarzan and Sherlock Holmes team up. Farmer's Lord Grandrith and Doc Caliban series portray analogues of Tarzan and Doc Savage. It consists of A Feast Unknown (1969), Lord of the Trees (1970) and The Mad Goblin (1970). Farmer has also written two mock biographies of both characters, Tarzan Alive (1972) and Doc Savage: His Apocalyptic Life (1973), which adopt the premise that the two were based on real people fictionalized by their original chroniclers, and connect them genealogically with a large number of other well-known fictional characters in a schema now known as the "Wold Newton family." Further, Farmer wrote both an authorized Doc Savage novel, Escape from Loki (1991) and an authorized Tarzan novel, The Dark Heart of Time (1999). In his 1972 novel Time's Last Gift, Farmer also explored the Tarzan theme combined with time travel, using the transparently reverse-syllabled name of "Sahhindar" for his hero (and the book's initials, TLG, as code for "Tarzan, Lord Greystoke"). A short story on this theme is "The Jungle Rot Kid on the Nod" (1968): "if William S. rather than Edgar Rice [Burroughs] had written Tarzan," Farmer also wrote Lord Tyger (1970) about a ruthless millionaire who tries to create a real Tarzan by having a child kidnapped and then brought up subject to the same tragic events which shaped Tarzan in the original books. In his incomplete historical Khokarsa cycle — Hadon of Ancient Opar (1974) and Flight to Opar (1976) — Farmer portrayed the "lost city" of Opar, which plays an important part in the Tarzan saga, in the time of its glory as a colony city of the empire of Khokarsa. One of the books mentions a mysterious grey-eyed traveller, clearly "Sahhindar"/Tarzan. Pseudonyms Farmer wrote Venus on the Half-Shell (1975) under the name Kilgore Trout, a fictional author who appears in the works of Kurt Vonnegut. He had planned to write more of Trout's fictional books (notably Son of Jimmy Valentine), but Vonnegut put an end to those plans.[23] Farmer's use of the pseudonym had caused confusion among many readers, who for some time assumed that Vonnegut was behind it; when the truth of Venus on the Half-Shell's authorship came out, Vonnegut was reported as being "not amused." In an issue of the semi-prozine The Alien Critic/Science Fiction Review, published by Richard E. Geis, Farmer claimed to have received an angry, obscenity-laden telephone call from Vonnegut about it. Thereafter Farmer wrote a number of pseudonymous "fictional author" stories, mostly for The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction. These were stories whose "authors" are characters in other stories. The first such story was "by" Jonathan Swift Somers III (invented by Farmer himself in Venus on the Half-Shell but inspired by one of the dead voices of Spoon River Anthology). Later Farmer used the "Cordwainer Bird" byline, a pseudonym invented by Harlan Ellison for film and television projects from which he wished to disassociate himself, and perhaps related to the name Cordwainer Smith, a pseudonym used by Paul Myron Anthony Linebarger.
