This series of prints has influenced builders around the world for hundreds of years. This unique copperplate engraving is from a text of eighteenth century architecture. I have 4 individually framed engravings listed, along with other architectural engravings which all came from the same estate. I also have other like etchings of architectural interest from the same estate. The image of this copper engraving is "The Sight of Volute" page 63, plate f.39 (?).A volute is a spiral, scroll-like ornament that forms the basis of the Ionic order, found in the capital of the Ionic column. It was later incorporated into Corinthian order and Composite column capitals. Four are normally to be found on an Ionic capital, eight on Composite capitals and smaller versions (sometimes called helix) on the Corinthian capital . Condition: In very good condition with some minor bleed-through of the script. Very good, any minor imperfections (such as age toning), if present, apparent in photo. In order to maintain the integrity and value of this antique print, the previously bound edge has not been trimmed. Please use the zoom function to inspect all antique prints closely prior to purchasing.Paper: Hand-made laid paper, blank on the reverse side. I believe this to be an original engraving, not a copy or modern reproduction. Without the frame the page measures 11 1/2" x 7 1.2" on a page that is 13 1/2" x 8 1/2" with English script on verso. Total Framed size is 20" x 15 1/8" Frame is gold leafed with striations which appear natural to the aged look of the subject matter. Ready to hang!**************************The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. The titles here trace developments in mostly English-language works on painting, sculpture, architecture, music, theater, and other disciplines. Instructional works on musical instruments, catalogs of art objects, comic operas, and more are also included. ++++The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
