In fact a new edition of Alfred Sadd of the Gilberts: A memoir, by Nelson Bitton, was recently re-published by the KiribatiProtestantChurch, for the first time in 60 years. Its author wrote: "Alfred Sadd, missionary to the Gilberts, did not desert the people in their hour of danger, and so he sacrificed his life."It was in 1933 that the young Cambridge graduate joined the mission at Rongorongo.Mr Sadd studied Gilbertese – the native language of the 16 Pacific Ocean islands – but admitted he possessed only one prepared sermon in that language. In 1941 when Europeans were advised to evacuate, Alfred, then 41, wrote to his brother saying that he had no intention of leaving the islanders.Mr Sadd's last letter home bore the date June 1942, just before the Japanese invaded, but did not reach England until after his death. After the Allied victory over the Japanese, Pastor Itaia, a local minister, wrote from Papautatelling of Mr Sadd's heroism. He said: "The Japs spread out the flag, but he saluted, perhaps to the flag, and walked round it."He was escorted by two Japanese soldiers to be tried by the commander. He went without fear; he was not at all troubled or heavy-hearted."Mr Sadd then slowed down, annoying his guards and, on reaching the commander, the Union flag was again placed right in front of him.He bent down, picked it up, and kissed it before presenting it to an officer."The Japs marvelled and stared at him as he stood before their commander," the letter said.Mr Sadd called out "Goodbye" in Gilbertese and was ferried to nearby Tarawa, one of the Gilbert islands, to join a group of Europeans. They were forced to work, but after an Australian warship sank several Japanese ships in the harbour the Japanese decided to execute them in revenge.Pastor Itaia went on: "They stood in a line, Mr Sadd in the middle. Presently he went out and stood in front of them. He spoke words of cheer, he stood in front so that he would be the first to die."Then came a Jap and struck him with his sword, and all the Europeans clapped their hands and were happy and unafraid when they saw the courage of Mr Sadd." The letter concluded: "He has gone in a blaze of glory. Bless him, long may he be remembered!" IT'S REALLY WORTH YOUR WHILE TO HAVE A BROWSE IN MY EBAY SHOP, WORLDBRIDGERS.
