The weight of this John R Wendt, Sterling Silver, with applied cast Bird in Flight atop a dome, Serving Spoon is 2.6 oz.  It measures 9-1/2 inches in height to the top of the wings and the bowl is 2-1/8 inches X 3-1/2 inches.  P robably made by John R. Wendt of New York City - c1870 .   It is marked on the back of the handle Clark & Biddle(retailer), sterling, patented (last quarter of 1800s) This extraordinary American sterling silver Aesthetic berry or casserole serving spoon has an applied cast bird atop a domed beaded finial.   The finial is engraved with initials (see photo).   This fabulous piece of antique aesthetic silver is in near pristine condition.  From the tip of the spoon to beak, wings, and tail of a bird in animated flight.  Extraordinary quality, extraordinary condition a fabulous piece of American aesthetic silver. We believe that clark & Biddle were  the retailers of this piece probably made by Wendt.   John R. Wendt & Co. New York, NY  1855-1870   Makers of a small line of coin and sterling flatware and hollowware, highly sought after today.  Wendt flatware often contains only the retailer's mark.  Dies were sold to Adams & Shaw; the remainder of the business was sold to Whiting Mfg. Co. Clark & Biddle Philadelphia, PA   Founded in the 1860s and later became Robbins, Clark & Biddle.  In 1878 they merged with Bailey & Co. to become Bailey, Banks & Biddle. 7% Sales Tax Applies to Florida residents.
