Composed of .925 sterling silver, this substantial pendant features the image of a Roman legionary soldier in profile. The inclusion of the Roman legionary in this pendant is an excellent example of the Neo-classical movement, which saw a revival of ancient Greco-Roman artistic styles and motifs. This style was especially popular in Grand Tour jewelry, the souvenir jewelry purchased by travelers on their Grand Tour. The Grand Tour was the traditional holiday of the wealthy during the Art Nouveau era and was an opportunity for travelers to learn more about the histories, cultures, and art of other countries, often lasting months or even years at a time. This pendant was most likely purchased on one such trip.  Large in size, the pendant was created by pouring sterling silver into a handcrafted mold which included the image of the Roman legionary. Facing to one side, the legionary is depicted with the classic Roman galea helmet, specifically in the Imperial Gallic style with a plume of feathers sticking out above the helmet proper. The remainder of the pendant is slightly curved and oval in shape, similar to the shields that would have been used by Roman legionaries. Completing this huge pendant is a jump ring bale, allowing it to be paired with a variety of antique chains and necklaces. A simple and elegant example of Neo-classical jewelry from the Art Nouveau era, this pendant would make an excellent addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don't miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural history.  Damage : Age appropriate wear. *This listing is for the item only. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry. The Grand Tour was the standard European vacation of the Georgian and Victorian eras. The opportunity it gave for studying culture, architecture and art made it a tradition, especially for the upper classes. The Grand Tour was popularized by the poet Lord Byron and the writer Mary Shelley, who was the author of Frankenstein. The Grand Tour was an opportunity for wealthy travelers to explore the world and experience different cultures over a 2 to 4-year period. And what better memento of this long trip than pieces of native souvenir jewelry such as Italian cameos, mosaic, and pietra dura. Pieces often had historical inspirations from the remnants of Pompeii to the pyramids of Egypt. Cultural learning was a focal point of the grand tour and the process of remembrance spilled over into jewelry souvenirs. The Neoclassical era corresponds roughly with the period between 1760 and 1830, a time of increased political upheaval and change in Europe and North America. Inspired by the themes of personal liberty and progress introduced during the Age of Enlightenment, populations at large began to distance themselves from the lavish and exorbitant lifestyles and fashion of the wealthy, looking to the ancient Greco-Roman world for inspiration and direction. Born from this search for new philosophies and fashions that reflected their Enlightenment values was the Neoclassical style.  Unlike philosophers and artists, who had examples of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy and art to base their work off, jewelers had very few pieces to reference, and instead created their own style of jewelry based on what they imagined would have been worn in the ancient Greco-Roman world. This saw jewelry emerge that incorporated motifs inspired by Greco-Roman architecture, artwork, and, later, excavations in Pompeii and Herculaneum. Unlike jewelry from previous eras, which was made for the wealthy elite, Neoclassical jewelry was designed for and influenced by the people.
