Composed of .925 sterling silver, this necklace is comprised of a Byzantine Bali popcorn chain upon which a beautiful almandine garnet pendant has been strung. The pendant also features expertly crafted floral accents, an example of the influence of the Jugendstil Movement on Art Deco era jewelry. The Jugendstil Movement began in the late 19th century and saw the inclusion of nature-inspired designs in jewelry, usually floral and other plant-related motifs, like the flower and leaves found in this necklace. As well as Jugendstil influences, this necklace also showcases Byzantine Bali characteristics in the design of the chain. The almandine garnet has a stunning, deep red hue and is semi-translucent, allowing light to pass through the body of the stone and display its internal matrix of darker red inclusions while illuminating its natural color. To keep the garnet secure it rests in a sterling silver bezel which contrasts beautifully against its rich, red hue. Surrounding the bezel is a sterling silver border adorned with floral and foliate accents which flow elegantly into the rest of the border. An additional, etched leaf accent adorns the large bale.  The pendant is strung on a Byzantine Bali style popcorn chain which was a later addition to the pendant. This thick chain pairs perfectly with the almandine garnet pendant, and allows for comfortable and secure wear of the piece. Completing the chain is a sturdy lobster clasp. When worn this necklace sits below the collarbone with the pendant resting against the decolletage on most people. A beautiful example of the merging of Byzantine Bali and Jugendstil design elements, this pendant necklace would make a lovely addition to any antique jewelry collection. Don't miss your chance to preserve this piece of history.  Damage:  Age appropriate wear. The popcorn chain is a later addition to the pendant's life; however, this does not affect wear or the overall appearance of the piece. The price has been reduced to reflect this.  *This listing is for the item only. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. The Jugendstil movement is the name of an artistic Renaissance that appeared in the late 19th century in southern Germany. This emerging art (also known as Art Nouveau in France, modernismo in Spain, Sezessionsstil in Austria, Stile Liberty or Stile Floreale in Italy) was artistically elegant and stylistically revolutionary. The Jugendstil style is most well-known for using themes from nature, particularly floral and plant motifs. As the movement progressed, geometric designs which continued to include nature motifs became more common. Theodor Farhner, Josef Hoffmann, Heinrich Levinger, Robert and Louis Koch, and Wiener Werkstaatte were popular designers and creators of the Jugendstil style. Byzantine Bali jewelry is crafted with a classic twisted or braided style that invokes a sense of the ancient times of the Byzantine Empire, where jewelry was worn by men and women as a symbol of status and power. Interwoven links, rope twist details, and looping applied wires and granulated beads are the hallmarks of this bold style of jewelry. Garnets are a type of silicate mineral that have a long history of use, dating back as far as the Bronze Age where they were used in jewelry and as an abrasive. Historically, this stone has also been known as “carbuncle” and its modern name, garnet, is derived from the Latin granatus meaning “seed,” which is thought to be a reference to pomegranates. Found in almost any color imaginable, these stones are most commonly red in hue, with blue being the rarest variety and deep red the most prized. Throughout history these beautiful stones have been worn by the wealthy elite, ranging from the pharaohs of Egypt to the European nobility of the Middle Ages. Today garnet continues to be a popular stone for use in jewelry, with the deepest red varieties being especially valuable and sought after.  Also known as Almandite, almandine is one of the most common garnet varieties, although only a very small percentage of the stones are considered gem quality. Almandine appears in a wide range of reds, including brownish-red, orange-red, and purple-red. Almandine is a hard gemstone which makes it a popular choice for gemstone jewelry. Almandine is found in many parts of the world, but most gem quality almandine is sourced from India, Sri Lanka, China, Madagascar, Australia, Brazil, and parts of the United States.
