Notable Features: This ring was handmade during the Retro period of the Art Deco era. This lovely ring is composed of 14k white gold as well as a Bohemian garnet stone surrounded by old European cut diamonds. This gorgeous ring is a classic example of the Hollywood Regency style, which rose to popularity during the Retro period. Eager to show off their wealth and style, Hollywood celebrities and socialites during this time would adorn themselves with glamorous jewelry, usually featuring large and beautiful stones. This ring was made in the style of Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, & Tiffany designs that were influencing the Hollywood Regency style, making the viewer think of the likes of Ava Gardner, and Katherine Hepburn. This lovely ring was likely originally intended to be worn originally as an engagement ring or a wedding band. The focal point of the engagement ring features a Bohemian garnet stone. This stone is a gorgeous semi-translucent red hue and illuminates beautifully when held up to the light. The stone has a cabochon cut, which adds depth and dimension to the piece. The stone is held in place using 14k white gold prong settings. The Bohemian garnet would have been foil backed. Foil backing involves placing a reflective foil behind a semi-translucent stone so that it reflects light back into the stone, illuminating the piece. This technique was specifically evolved for jewelry that was worn in candlelight and was not used as frequently after electric light was invented. Surrounding the Bohemian garnet are old European cut diamonds. These old European cut cut diamonds measure in at a cumulative 0.40 carats and are sparkly and eye clear. The diamonds are inlaid into the face of the ring, which has been topped with .900 platinum directly surrounding the diamonds. The cool white tones of the gold and platinum topping are gorgeous in contrast with the glittering clear hues of the diamonds, as well as the deep red hue of the Bohemian garnet. This lovely engagement ring is composed of 14k white gold, as indicated by the "14k" on the inside of the ring's band. The shoulders of the ring are adorned with regal, geometric designs, which would have been popular during the Retro period of the Art Deco era. The face of the ring is also adorned with milgrain edging in some places, which allows the ring more angles upon which light can catch and reflect, adding a glamorous sparkle to this lovely item. The under gallery of the ring features plenty of open space beneath the face of the ring, which adds to the weightless appearance to this piece. This lovely ring has a wearable size of around 7.25. However, due to the use of a sizing band, this measurement may be slightly off in either direction. A jeweler could easily remove the sizing band, or change the size of the ring itself. This gorgeous ring is not one to be forgotten. Don't miss your opportunity to own this incredible piece of history. Damage: Age appropriate wear. This ring has a sizing band, which reduces its wearable size. The sizing band could be removed, should the individual who purchases this ring chose to do so. *This listing is for the item only. All display boxes and/or photography props do not come with your purchase.* The History The Art Deco era is famous for being the "Gatsby" or "Roaring Twenties" era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Retro jewelry refers to pieces created in the 1940s and 1950s. This was a period during which jewelry designers were largely influenced by the changes stemming from World War II. These designs reflect an infusion of futuristic vision with elements inspired by preceding periods, encompassing a variety of gemstones, shapes, and materials. Materials used commonly in Retro jewelry are gold, gold alloys, and silver as the wartime put a restriction on the use of platinum. Designs can be masculine, geometric and modern, or softer, more feminine and floral. The Hollywood Regency style came into fashion during the 1930s, ushered along by the Golden Age of Hollywood. This style was heralded by bright, contrasting colors and a modernization of the opulence of Baroque styles, featuring a deliberately frivolous extravagance that screamed glitz and glamour. “Big girls need big diamonds” was taken to heart, and the gorgeous Hollywood stars decked themselves appropriately, with blindingly glittering jewels to showcase their lives of luxury. Engagement rings & wedding bands with gemstones were very popular during the Art Deco era. Before the round Brilliant Cut was perfected for diamonds in the Mid-Century era, women preferred these gemstones as they could be cut into the round & oval cuts that let off an incredible sparkle which shined brighter than that of a larger Old European cut diamond. Bohemian garnet is a transparent or translucent mineral of a dark red hue. Bohemian garnets were mined starting in the 16th century in the Bohemian Hills of Czechoslovakia. During the Victorian and Art Deco eras, this type of garnet reached a height of popularity. There are no known mines in existence today, which has made the remaining stones highly coveted. Diamond is derived from the Greek word, “adamas,” which means “unbreakable.” Diamonds are extremely rare, with the earliest diamonds being discovered in India around the 4th century BC and being traded along the Silk Road; the trade route between India and China. During the latter half of the 18th century, diamonds were discovered in South Africa. Diamonds are renowned for their strength and brilliance of color and ability to reflect and disperse light. This is what gives them such a brilliant sparkle. Colors range in blue, yellow, brown, green, purple, pink, orange, and red; the less color a diamond has, the higher its grade is. Diamonds range from 1 billion to 3.5 billion years old, and because of their age and qualities, have become the symbol for love across many cultures. The Old European Cut was the last type of diamond to be cut completely by hand. It was the successor of the Old Mine Cut diamond and the predecessor of the modern round brilliant cut. The Old European Cut was very popular during the Edwardian and Art Deco eras. It is round and has a high crown and more facets than previous cuts, giving these stones a high sparkle. These diamonds are very rare today, as most were re-purposed, and cut into more modern shapes. Milgrain was first popularized during the Art Deco era and is most commonly associated with the Gatsby-style parties and gorgeous styles of that time. When the use of milgrain edging first began in the jewelry community each individual bead that makes up the milgrain edging had to be made and applied by hand. This process can be mimicked much more easily in present day jewelry making, which adds a touch of nostalgia and pride to antique or vintage milgrain edged jewelry items.
