The band tapers from 4.4 mm at the shoulders to 2.9 mm wide at the base of the ring. Notable Features: This ring was handmade during the Retro period of the Art Deco era. This absolutely stunning ring is composed of 14k rose gold and features rubies as well as a corundum alexandrite stone with a gorgeous color change of blue to purple. The use of such a large and unique stone in this ring is an excellent example of the Hollywood Regency style which was very popular during the Retro period. Eager to show off their wealth and style, Hollywood celebrities and socialites during this time would adorn themselves with glamorous jewelry, usually featuring large and beautiful stones. This ring was made in the style of Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, & Tiffany designs that were influencing the Hollywood Regency style, making the viewer think of the likes of Ava Gardner, and Katherine Hepburn. The corundum alexandrite is blue-purple in everyday light, with intense hints of both colors as can be seen in the first photo provided above. The third and fourth photos show the dramatic change from purple to blue that the stone displays as bright light passes through its semi-translucent body at different angles and intensities. With a classic round faceted cut, the corundum alexandrite also reflects light with eye-catching sparkle and shimmer. The combination of its intense color change and sparkly appearance would have made this stone very fashionable for inclusion in Retro period of the Art Deco era jewelry. To either side of the corundum alexandrite are two round faceted rubies. These rubies measure in at 0.32 carats and are a semi-translucent deep red and pink hue. The ring itself is composed of 14k rose gold in a star motif. The corundum alexandrite and the ruby stones are held in place using 14k rose gold prong settings. The warm rosy tones of the gold are gorgeous in marriage with the ruby red hues of the rubies as well as in contrast with the cool purple and blue tones of the corundum alexandrite. Every portion of this ring serves to bring out the best in the others. The face of the ring was made in a star-like motif, with four large bands of gold radiating outwards from the corundum stone, as well as star-like rays surrounding the rubies. The ring is completed with a smooth, polished 14k rose gold band for comfortable and secure wear. This ring is a size 7.5 and can be worn by any person of any gender. A classic example of Retro period of the Art Deco era jewelry, this ring would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection. This gorgeous ring is not to be forgotten, and is certain to stun. Don't miss your chance to preserve this piece of history. Damage: Age appropriate wear. The gold is ever so slightly tarnished in some areas, specifically in the portions that are low relief or bend inwards, which is to be expected of an item this age. There is a sizing mark on the inside of the band near one of the shoulders from the ring being sized at some point in its history, this does not affect the overall wear of the item whatsoever. *This listing is for the item only. All display boxes and/or photography props do not come with your purchase.* The History The Art Deco era is famous for being the "Gatsby" or "Roaring Twenties" era. A lot of gorgeous and timeless designs in jewelry came out of this period. Jewelry from this period was most often crafted between 1920 and 1940. Art Deco jewelry sometimes featured white gold or platinum, geometric designs, European cut diamonds, filigree, and calibre cut stones that are specifically cut to fit the design of the piece. During the Art Deco period jewelers often made jewelry upon custom order, this would often take weeks to months to completely craft by hand. Retro jewelry refers to pieces created in the 1940s and 1950s. This was a period during which jewelry designers were largely influenced by the changes stemming from World War II. These designs reflect an infusion of futuristic vision with elements inspired by preceding periods, encompassing a variety of gemstones, shapes, and materials. Materials used commonly in Retro jewelry are gold, gold alloys, and silver as the wartime put a restriction on the use of platinum. Designs can be masculine, geometric and modern, or softer, more feminine and floral. The Hollywood Regency style came into fashion during the 1930s, ushered along by the Golden Age of Hollywood. This style was heralded by bright, contrasting colors and modernization of the opulence of Baroque styles, featuring a deliberately frivolous extravagance that screamed glitz and glamour. “Big girls need big diamonds” was taken to heart, and the gorgeous Hollywood stars decked themselves appropriately, with blindingly glittering jewels to showcase their lives of luxury. Corundum alexandrite was an extremely popular gemstone during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras. During this time, natural alexandrite was nearly impossible to get your hands on due to how rare it was. In response, Corundum alexandrite started being produced in labs and was priced as high as natural gemstones, as people loved the incredible color changing pattern. In natural daylight, the stone may appear to have a purple to pinkish-purple hue. Depending on the light source, the color changes between blues, purples and other colors in between. Rubies are one of the four precious gemstones and are prized for their pink to blood red colors. The most valued hue of ruby is called blood-red, or pigeon blood, for the bright, rich hue it exhibits. The color of a ruby comes from the element chromium. Rubies have adorned royal and religious jewelry for centuries and were especially esteemed in Asian countries like China and India, where they were thought to bring good fortune. Rubies are graded by color, clarity, cut, and carat. Rubies are often also evaluated based on their geographic origin. Domestic US: All items ship within one business day of receiving payment.
