Seller: dmh19_5 (461) 100%, Location: Dover, Delaware, Ships to: US & many other countries, Item: 133026910825 This listing is for a Scottish pendant/medallion that is fully decorated on both sides. An eagle is encircled by butterflies and flowers. A large piece of highly polished carnelian agate, wrapped in brass, is the base for the pendant. The stone is in very good condition with some light scratches but no nicks or chips. It measures 2 1/8" across and is 3/4" thick including the brass banding. Some remnant of a silver wash can be seen on the brass. The eagle is in wings up position and the butterflies and flowers form the shape of a shield. The Victorian's used symbolism extensively in their jewelry and this pendant is a great example of that. Each element had a meaning. For example, the eagle is a symbol of strength and courage while a shield represented protection. The Victorians saw the butterfly as representative of the human soul. Its caterpillar form is life, the chrysalis is death, and the butterfly the resurrection. The little flowers are forget-me-nots which, of course, mean remember me. This is truly an outstanding pendant in the Scottish tradition of pebble jewelry. It is rare to find a piece in such good condition. It was found at an estate sale hanging on a disintegrating black ribbon. Please review the photos as they are part of the description. Condition: Good antique condition., Era: Victorian, Modified Item: No, Country/Region of Manufacture: United Kingdom, Style: Pendant, Main Stone: Carnelian, Metal: Brass Silver Wash
