This card is one of several that came from an estate. They are all celluloid and hand made with slightly different details.  It is a beautiful, hand painted First Communion piece.  The celluloid is slightly translucent with a more translucent decoration around the edge The card is matte on the front, and shiny on the back.  It has a Victorian scrap First Communion girl with a little banner.  Victorian scrap are bright colored chromolithograph die cuts that were REALLY popular during the Victorian era, used by just about everyone for scrapbooks, and for card making, and more.  Hence... "Victorian ... Scrap".  It is 3 5/8" tall and about 2.1/8" wide. This one appears unused.  I have other celluloid cards, so take a peek.  This one would make an exceptional First Communion gift. Holy cards have been around since at least the 15th century.  As the years have gone on, the cards became more elaborate.  The Nuns and Friars in the monasteries, convents and abbeys often created hand made holy cards and scapulars as special "blessings" for special events and for patron Saints.  Just like today, ideas were shared between the groups, so when celluloid cards became popular, they became popular in many areas.  This card is French, as are many of the antique cards that I have for sale.
  • Condition: Used
  • Condition: This card is just so beautiful! It is a fairly thick piece of celluloid with a translucent design around the edge. Added to the card is Victorian Scrap little First Communion Girl with her candle and a tiny scrap banner that says Souvenir de First Communion. The card is in excellent condition with no breaks or damage. There is a tiny dark mark on the right hand side, and a dark place on the back where the glue used to attach the scrap piece has darkened the celluloid. There are no markings or writings. This card is one of several from the same collection that I have, one of which is marked 1903. They all look like they were made at the same time.
