(Please keep a look out in coming days, weeks, and months from now to the end of the year for many more Nuke-Rad enthusiast collectibles; some very unique offerings to come! Watch my sales!) This listing is for a single tube of radium-based luminous material sold in the 1920’s as a quack medical cure / handy luminous source. Limited info on the health uses purported, but for luminous source use, it would have glowed brilliantly in its heyday. Consists of a sealed glass tube with diameter 2mm and length of 2.5cm. Inside is, based on available literature, a mixture of radium mixed with a luminous material that emitted a glow when the product was still new. The purported use was to use near endocrine glands (not a wise idea given our current knowledge; indeed this item leaves a red mark from a mild “gamma burn” if stuck to a persons skin for more than a 1-2 hours), but alternative use was to mark everything from pull switches, to zipper pulls, etc., essentially anything you wanted to be able to see in the dark—given its activity, you could have probably seen your light switch or other item marked with it from a mile off. Made with UnDark radioluminous material specific for use in the tubes. As the tube was more durable than paint applied to surfaces which would eventually need repainting after relatively little wearing by friction, the tube provided the durability for extended use. Over time since the product was manufactured, the luminous effect stopped, but the radium material remains and can today be used as a handy check source for essentially any radiation monitoring equipment (though the sale of this item is strictly as a novelty – it’s original designation and as available to public as such). The sealed nature of the tube kept the product inside, but a porous plug on the end of the tube allowed helium gas from alpha decay to escape whilst retaining the short-lived radon which quickly decays back to a non-gaseous daughters. The resulting activity is thus higher due to accumulation of the aforementioned decay products being totally retained inside. It is now a quite ‘spicy’ source which can be used as a check on equipment, especially high-range equipment. Note that the powder contents are totally retained, and the glass filters out all alpha and most beta, leaving just a gamma component. The luminous paint can be slightly recharged for a moment by exposure to UV-C, but the light is very fleeting. Again, sold purely as a novelty to those wanting a piece of the radium-era. Currently have 3 available, but limit of 1 per buyer as it is a collector’s item, I don’t want hoarders taking the fun of collecting away from everyone. This lists the radiometrological data for the weakest tube, others available with up to 25% more activity will be supplied if first sells. Sold as was originally intended, that is as a paint/luminous item available to consumers (not restricted to industrial use), but serves as a decent check source if properly handled. See notes regarding legality of ownership/possession/transfer of this item. Before information regarding radiometrological data, a note on the high cost of certain collectibles... Due to shielding which may be needed on certain items to get them below the emitted radiation thresholds, the cost of these associated items is higher. The cost of the shielding is therefore already built-in to the final cost. Also, shipment, even by ground using a common carrier is more expensive due to HazMat surcharges. Please keep this in mind when evaluating whether a collector's item purchased from me is worth it--I never overcharge for shielding or additional time / resources to get said items ready for proper shipment, so you are being charged the actual costs for me to ship the item in question. Now the details: The following describes the radiometrologic data of the item: Unmoderated/unattenuated measurements: 540 kCPM (540,000 CPM) (alpha + beta + gamma) on a pancake GM with mica window (2.0mg/cm^2) @ distance ‘contact’ which is no farther than 0.5 cm from tube opening. All measures are that of 2 pi geometry. Efficiency measurements for this standard configuration GM type is widely available, though the best efficiencies are obtained for beta (minus), and lower efficiencies for alpha and gamma. Overall efficiencies for GM tubes are low compared with other detection technologies, but GM are by far the most common and therefore reported here. 9.72 mR/hr (gamma only [Roentgen ‘R’ exposure only valid for gamma as it is an exposure measurement for photon AKA electromagnetic radiation]) Gamma activity reported is validated using 3 different detection technologies all in line with reported value. Unattenuated. This is a report of unattenuated gamma photons at distance 0.5 cm from source using an NaI scintillation detector sensitive to gamma only. Moderated/attenuated measurements: 26.0 kCPM (26,000 CPM) (gamma only) on same pancake GM with mica window @ distance ‘contact’ which is no farther than 0.5 cm from tube opening. All measures are that of 2 pi geometry. Attenuation through 1.25mm lead sheet with 0.5mm paraffin to eliminate all alpha, most beta and bremsstrahlung, leaving gamma component. 5.60 mR/hr (gamma only [Roentgen ‘R’ exposure only valid for gamma as it is an exposure measurement for photon AKA electromagnetic radiation]) Gamma activity reported is validated using 3 different detection technologies all in line with reported value. Attenuation through 1.25mm lead sheet with 0.5mm paraffin to eliminate all alpha, most beta and bremsstrahlung, leaving gamma component. The tube is provided in a new amber “EPA 2000” precleaned vial (the EPA 2000 clean is a certification of cleanliness of a container to accept samples for evaluation/assays; this certification is especially relevant with regard to maintaining a radiologically hygienic field and containment. (all of my radioactive samples I have, from quack medical items and samples of radiochemicals to military exhibits and analytical exemplars are provided in vials, jars, or other suitable containment vessels, so please note this when bidding—amber sample vials with lab certified UL underwritten seals for harsh contents are good for safety, but observing the contents is can be difficult without removing them for the time needed, or movement to a different container). The amber vial I have packaged the marker tube into is designed to be a barrier against loose/removable contamination developing should a break develop in the tube; additionally, one has a convenient holder for such an item like this to easily add to a collection without storing unpackaged. Just an extra degree of safety. Legalese regarding item as an ‘antiquity’ 10 CFR § 31.12 General license for certain items and self-luminous products containing radium-226 Specific citation: 10 CFR § 31.12(a)(1) (a) A general license is hereby issued to any person to acquire, receive, possess, use, or transfer, in accordance with the provisions of paragraphs (b), (c), and (d) of this section, radium-226 contained in the following products manufactured prior to November 30, 2007. (1) Antiquities originally intended for use by the general public. For the purposes of this paragraph, antiquities mean products originally intended for use by the general public and distributed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as radium emanator jars, revigators, radium water jars, radon generators, refrigerator cards, radium bath salts, and healing pads. Shipment shall be by ground via common carrier and is exempt from most regulations, except those regarding external radiation measurements on outermost package. Note that gamma measure of this item at contact is below the value established, so all points on a package would automatically be below established thresholds. Additionally, internal package shall bear notice that contents are radioactive. Please note that due to lead sheeting required around the source (only enough is used to achieve safe transport, you are not overcharged for shielding not needed); please be aware that HazMat fees and special shielding using the lead sheets adds to my shipment cost. This cost has been included in the minimum price I have set for sale. Best offers will be considered, but they should be made with the knowledge of the extra costs associated with shipping an item like this properly and I will not violate the law to get an antique from here to there. I know true collectors will appreciate this. In accordance with cited CFR, export of this item is not permitted, and sales are limited to the 48 continental U.S. states. Any additional questions should be asked before purchase. Seller reserves right to limit sales to those persons deemed qualified (generally, adults 18 years of age or older who assert reasonable knowledge of the item they are purchasing)Every effort has been made to assure statements and technical data is accurate. All measurements are performed on NIST-calibrated equipment traceable to a specific set of standards.. 120 1920x1200 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Condition: N/A, see full description below.
