Seller: acmeltd (17,850) 100%, Location: Montville, New Jersey, Ships to: Worldwide, Item: 323932309772 If you collect early electrical quack medicine machines, then this one is a must for your collection. This is a Smith & Shaw Electric Co. Closed Cell Pocket Battery. This little device has two wet cell batteries and an adjustable vibrating coil inside to provide the variable intensity shocks. It was meant to be portable and carried in ones pocket. Yes, Virginia, there was a TENS machine in the late 19th century after all (although I wonder how many articles of clothing got destroyed by leaking battery cells!). The unit is complete and has what is left of the two original gutta percha wet cell batteries, plus two extra petrified rubber stoppers and a glass tube complete with an original zinc rod and stopper in it. The gutta percha battery bodies are extremely fragile, and if I were to keep it, one of the first things I would do would be to make a rubber mold of them so new ones could be cast for display. Size is about 7-1/2" long, 4-1/4" wide and 1-3/4" thick when closed. Amaze your friends and confound your enemies with this great example of an early TENS machine! Good luck & thanks for looking !
