  • A LITTLE more History  Solon Palmer, AMERICAS OLDEST PERFUMER s probably one of the best known of the early American perfumers.
  • on 26 June 1847 he established his own perfumery business at Number 8 West Palmer’s business thrived as Cincinnati’s population rapidly grew due the influx of (mainly German) immigrants who settled the area.  As well, tens of thousands of people moving further west used the city as a key staging post and many would have purchased Palmer fragrances such as  New Mown Hay, Rose Geranium, Lavender  and of course, his  Bear Oil Pomade  would no doubt also have found a ready market. Within a few years he had outgrown his first shop and relocated to larger, three storey, premises at 169 Main Street where he advertised himself as  Solon Palmer Perfumer & Chemist.

Palmer’s claim to fame as America’s oldest perfumer originated during his Cincinnati days. He organized the first travelling sales force to represent a perfumer in America and by this means he was responsible for the wide distribution of the first general line of cosmetics from a single company. His salesmen visited all the main towns in Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and New York and the newly organised Pony Express even carried Palmer products to San Francisco. But after twenty four successful years in Cincinnati the irresistible lure of larger markets saw Palmer move his business to New York in 1871 to leased premises at 12 Platt Street, not far from Wall Street..

The 100 Years   of the Declaration of Independence, celebrated in 1876, provided the catalyst for Palmer to start manufacturing perfumed soaps and also to produce one of the earliest American-manufactured rouge preparations –  Balm of Roses.  (Henry Tetlow actually produced his  Shell Pink Rouge  in 1871). Also making their first appearance at about the same time were; a liquid powder known as ‘Pearl Drops’ – no doubt a health hazard – and a cake makeup with the strange name of  Magnum Bonum.  It may well have been both great and good but its life was short and collectors will be extraordinary lucky to find examples of either of these products.

In 1913 the company’s first big seller was –  Gardenglo  and this would be the line on which the company’s relied on for more than 30 Years
