Noritake Morimura (M in Wreath Mark) Handpainted Bowl with 2 Handles This is a beautiful, colorful antique bowl. There is a raised beaded design on the rim and handles. In the center of each handle is a bead or stone. A leaf design is embossed in each corner, and there is also an embossed design on each side of the handles. This is 6 1/4" across, not including the handles. The word "Nippon" occurs on most Japanese wares from around 1890 until 1921. From 1891 imports to America were required to be marked with the country of origin, in western characters. Thus Japanese exports to America were marked with "Nippon" in English from this date to 1921.   In 1921 American import law changed to require the place of origin be marked on a product in English. Since Nippon was an adaptation of a description of the island country in the native language, Nippon was no longer acceptable under the new law. Backstamps after 1921 state "Japan" or "Made in Japan."  I believe the "M in a wreath" mark was first used in 1914, which would date this piece from 1914 to 1921.
