In many pre-historic cultures, especially later ones such as Aztecs, pottery stamps such as this were used to impress designs into wet clay as part of the pottery-making process. They are also thought to have been used for printing designs onto textiles. Mesoamerican seals (or sellos) were used for printing with colored pigments. The Oxford Companion to Western Art, notes that surviving Pre-Columbian examples are made of clay or terracotta and occasionally of stone, but later seals have been found made of wood. The relief patterns were either for a positive or negative image. The use of seals was widespread in Mesoamerica, parts of the Caribbean, and in the intermediate areas between Mesoamerica and the central Andes in South America. Use in Mesoamerica began about 1500 B.C.E. during the Pre-Classic period. A large numbers of seals have also been found at Olmec sites in the Gulf Coast region from the same era. Measures 3½ inches long. From the estate of the same collector whose Mayan bowl I sold 2 weeks ago (can be seen in my sold items). Per family members , the gentleman traveled often to Mexico and collected many pieces of ancient pottery and other artifacts. As we go through the boxes that were in storage more pieces will be for sale....check back! Shipping is $8.45 to U.S. addresses. I share your health concerns. I am now handling products to be shipped with extra care. I hand sanitize first and then handle the product and packing materials wearing latex gloves. You might consider the additional precaution of leaving the package unopened perhaps in your car or garage for 48 hours (which appears to be how long the virus lasts on porous surfaces such as cardboard and paper). Enjoy and be healthy. #StayHome We buy the old, unusual, eclectic, and rare from southern Arizona estates. Check back often to see our latest finds!
